On the occasions when my horses are in all day i've always mucked out then chucked the beds up the banks and left them up while they are in all day, suppose so it makes it easy for me when I get home from work just to scoop poo out of the middle then re-lay bed rather than another full muck out, other livery on my yard leaves her beds down and they always seem to stink by the night time (she doesn't muck out in morning though), but just wondering what others do - beds up ? or beds down ?

I would do a full muck out in the morning, put the bed down and then skip out in the evening. My horse scrapes down the bed herself anyway so it would be down by the time evening came!! It's okay if u've got rubber matting but standing on concreate all day long isn't good for their feet.

If the horse is in, I would leave bed down. How would you like to lie down on the bare floor?

My horses are only very rarely in all day but they never lay down during the day - only overnight, no need to be curt with your response it was an enquiry, no assasination (SP) needed thankyou.

My girls do pull some of it down and if they need a pee they always seem to hit the banks and as it's so rare that they are in I don't believe it does them any harm standing on the concrete it's no harder than the mud is in the field this morning that was frozen solid.

Thanks though for replies nice to know what everyone does.

The idea of leaving a horse in a stable with no bed or matting sends shivers down my spine

Having had a horse slip and fall on bare concrete floor, then do a fair amount of damage as she thrashed around trying to get some pitch of the ground to get back up, I can safely say there needs to be either straw or rubber matting in a stable if the horse is going to be left unsupervised for any period of time.

Can you not just skip out at night to avoid mucking out twice?

I muck out in the morning and get everything ready for my friend to bring her in at lunchtime. She has thick rubber but i keep the bed down for her and then skip out again tonight. I can see why it is easier to leave it up during the day though! xx

I put my beds up during the day but my horses have rubber matting, I have to admit I wouldn't like to leave my horses standing on concrete as its too easy to slip.

I bed on straw so after it's all banked up and swept out I then put a layer down in the middle just for him to wee on. He seems quite happy with it like that and its only a quick muck out before relaying it at bed time.

On the rare occasions mine are in now, I would muck out and chuck the bed up, the pony will pull his back down anyway and Bud pulls a bit down to wee on. I haven't got time to do a full muck out twice I'm afraid.

My girl has been in for 2 days now as our yard is an ice rink at the moment!!! i've been puttting her bed up during the day with a good bit down, V normally pulls some down as well but she only lies down at night so dont need to worry about that.

I think that if you leave the bed down all day with them in it you loose alot more of your bed than you would if you put it up.

They get a barrow of shavings, night or day if they're in, it makes no difference, and that's all and they always lie down.

Bolshy_Mare, I think Marciamac was just making a fair comment, it didn't come across as being offensive really.

If my horses have to stay in during the day they have the same bed that they would have at night and I skip out in the evening. Perhaps your horses would go to bed during the day if you left one down for them.

I throw the bed up into banks around the sides and then put down a decent sprinkling at the back for her to wee on. She's on mats, btw - wouldn't do that on concrete due to risk of slipping. Even when we had a concrete floor and I left a full bed down in the day she never ever lay down in the day, though, so I'm happy that she's comfortable with just a sprinkle.

I do a full muck out in the morning and then put it all back down for her.

When I first got Star I tried leaving it up, but she dragged it down and slept on it anyway. Since then I have reset the whole bed, then in the evening I just skip out and set straight.
