Am sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo bored at the moment, weather is crap, got really bad withdrawals from riding as im pregnant and officially banned. So taken to reading to fill up my evening where my horses would normally have done the job nicely.
Can anyone reccommend some really good books, ideally horsey ones, read loads of dick francis and john francome, fancy something a bit different.

Im in the same boat as you, im now 8 months pregnant and my horse books seem to have been replaced with 'What to expect in the first year' lol

Some of the many I've enjoyed are Jane Smiley's book Horse Heaven and In the Presence of Horses by Barbara Dimmick. All the books you probably read as a kid are worth reading again eg the Pullein-Thomson sisters ones, Patricia Leitch or Pat Smythe etc. you can find them in charity shops or look on www.Amazon.co.uk

What about books by Joyce Stranger? Lovely animal books some horsey ones such as zara and Breed amongst giants(or similar

) about shires. Drag Hunt by James broom-Lynn, rather raunchy hunt sabateur story.

Try Lyndon Stacey - Cut Throat is the best; there's also Blindfold, Outside Chance and another whose name escapes me.....Caroline Akrill's Ticket To Ride trilogy is fantastic, plus you can't beat Jilly Cooper!

Non-horsey, I agree that Jodi Picoult is very good, and if you dont mind a bit of violence and bad language, Martina Cole is very addictive! Alternatively, if you want a real laugh, try Adrian Mole - there are six of them, all hilarious!

I used to love Joyce Strangers books. One of them "Never Count Apples" was based on a litter of puppies we had who suffered from lead poisoning. Sadly Joyce died earlier this month.

THE SILVER BRUMBY!!!

and all 11 sequels! *Technically* kid's books but I still love them all the same

And some non horsey ones...
The Secret History by Donna Tartt (bit hard to get into but very good)
The River King & Here on Earth by Alice Hoffman (and any of her other stuff really)

Thanks guys that should keep me going until i drop.
Big congrats Maes_mummy, at least your nearly there now, ive still another 5 months to go, this is my second so i did all the pregancy / motherhood books last time, and dont fancy them again. Im crap at anything sad though, i can blubb my eyes out hysterically at the warner brothers version of black beauty.
