Been to hell and back today, thought i was going to loose my boy!

Was on my way to the yard am and my friend from yard phones to tell me that she had fed horsey normal feed: scoop of cool mix, which is usual before riding out.And, he had a blockage. got ot yard and it was the worst thing i could have imagined poor boy was trying so hard to get rid of it and couldn't<i felt so helpless The vet had been called as soon as i spoke to my friend, the wait until he came seemed like hours, althoughit was only 30 mins. he came out and put tubes down his nostrils and dear boy let him do it ok until he changed nostrils and then he didin't like it but let him do it, and then he managed to get rid of the blockage it .But then after about an hour his breathing became really laboured and he was heaving, so called the vet again and he said to put him out to graze and if he didn't improve to call him out again. Vet came and checked him again and said he was ok but if his breathing is still noisy tomorrow to call him and he will have anti biotics. The main thing is that the vet said he should not have been fed coarse mix dry , which i did not, to my horror, realise could be such a dangerous thing to do. So to any of you who have done the same as me :

: DONT DO IT AGAIN.

Wow, lesson learnt - my 3 yr old is prone to choke and she never gets anything dry at all.

My goodness, that must have been awfull! Don't think I;ve ever fed it dry but I'm sure now I have read that I'm damn sure I never will!

i had the same thing happen about 10 years ago and it was horrible but i now always and water.

Aww, what a scarey experience for you, My 4 yr old had two very minor choke incedents over the winter a small walk cleared it in both situations, her feed is now so sloppy she could drink it though a straw!

My horse has had choke twice since I have had him, both times after eating haylage that had gone a bit dry. I always soak his hard feed.
Choke is so distressing - last time it happened to my boy I was walking him round stroking his gullet with tears streaming down my face! Luckily he cleared it within 10mins of it happening and then was absolutely fine - grazing as if nothing had happened, while I'm a trembling wreck!

Glad all is ok now!! Its horrible watching them when they have choke. My TB has done it twice and now his feed is like soup and his hay and haylage are in a small holed net - soaked

, it has been quite a steep learning curve with my boy, i have only had him for 5mths and we seem to have had a fair few probs. to deal with. Just recovering from losing nearly all his hair on his face from an alergy which was horrid for him. Prior to that when i bought him he had a twisted pelvis, got it sorted ok. He also had hooks on his teeth so he couldnt eat properly when i bought him, so the dentist fixed that! I really hope that nothing else is going to happen! !

We had this today too! Our yearling filly had her feed wet, but maybe not wet enough, I reckon she took a big mouthful (it was Hifi) and choked. Lots of retching, and spasming, sods law neither of us had our mobiles, and in my mind I was thinking that if we couldn't shift it, the vet wouldn't get there quick enough anyway. Cue lots of rubbing of the gullet etc, after about 20 minutes it cleared.

All the feeds will look like soup from now on - it was very frightening, and if I can avoid it again, I will.

My old girl gets a half scoop of pony nuts, dry, each day, so she thinks she is getting a feed like the others. Should this be wet too? We always add water to the big horses dinners (ie hi-fi, mix & nuts) but not too just the nuts!!

My vet said that all food should be fed wet ,so i will certainly be following his advice. Maybe your horse is so used to it that they may not be at risk, but i won't be taking that chance again!
