Did anyone else go to Beeston horse sale last week? I was totally astounded that horses and ponies were going for £5 and £10 Some were younsters but others were broken. All were nice sorts. It isn't worth breeding to take the there and make a loss. (the entry fee is £5 plus commision on the sale!) Hope they got good homes

My boy was from Beeston and is a little cracker - an absolute gem. Quite a lot of the horses there are to sell in order to settle debts and it's not their owners selling them - it's the person they owe the debt to. They don't care who they sell them to and what they sell them for - as long as it's to cover the debt owed. Saying that, some of them there are for genuine reasons too. I have to sit on my hands to stop myself from buying everything!!

Like I said, my boy is from Beeston and how he ended up there I have no idea. He has a forever home with me now though so all ends well for him :)

Am sure there are others... zoo food etc, if everything had to go through potters or turners there would be even more of a backlog

Never heard of High Peak, and had no idea Turners had shut down. But there are still horse slaughterhouses all over the world and I have no doubt there will be a few who end up travelling Europe.

Turners (also known as Red Lion) shut by FSA. High Peak Meats was the name for his horse meat export business. He wanted to change the name of the abbatoir and this resulted in an inspection by FSA who deemed it not suitable. Also it probably didn't help him that Hillside planted secret cameras in the slaughterhouse, and filmed the cruelty.

Well, you learn something new everyday! Thank you for updating me. :)

One pony last week think about 5 didn't have any biders, and auctioneer said it'll end up on side of road! It was a bit sickly and needed a vet not shoved in sale. Had a snotty nose and the most horrendous diarrhoea. He almost begged for bid and she fetched £5 someone felt sorry for her

but turners was an abattoir not a slaughterhouse, I only ask as potters is very close to my Mum's but I still know of two slaughterhouse's/knackermen nearby that supply meat to other customers - zoos etc

There are multiple meat men at Beeston. There is one who supplies Chester Zoo (or that's his rumoured client at least) and another exports to Europe. Red Lion was closed but Turners itself still exists and they still buy for meat. Red Lion was not their only slaughterhouse.

Beeston is particularly bad at the moment. People are selling their stock so they don't have to fund them through the winter. Most of the £5 lot are welsh ponies. Coloured cobs are going for a little more (about £20). Some of these are going for meat but not all. I know of a few that have been snapped up by very good homes.

Beeston in theory won't exist for much longer. It's closing. I say in theory as it is merging with another and moving to Middlewich- Wright Manley the auctioneers have merged with another company. I won't be sad...I only live down the road and I don't like what goes on there a lot of the time. I watched a gorgeous 17.2hh Irish Draft former huntmaster's horse go for meat and it was so upsetting :( If I had the land I'd have bought the big chap. But he's one of hundreds who go for meat there.

Went to our local horse sale. Like Beeston ponies going for £5 or less! I bought a little four year old mare for £15.75p For time of year in a poor state. She now has been wormed eating her way through as many haylage nets as I put up for her. She will be brought on to be a childs pony with all due care and attention. Every year the same breeders selling animals and not even getting their money back on passport diesel etc. Its heartbreaking to watch these horses and ponies. The sooner they stop this indiscriminate breeding the better. If you're not going to keep it don't breed it.

It is so sad.
My new filly came from Beeston just a couple of weeks ago.
Hopefully she will be with me for a long time
