I will be leaving for the Futurity Championships on 26th August, so I thought I would start this thread to see who of the HHO members would be going, and who I could possibly meet.

I hope to meet you all there, I do not bite, so please come over and say hi.

By my powers of deduction I have the following qualified.

Foal - Sandroa Du Rouet
Yearlings - Bliss Du Rouet and Heavenly Stranger
2 year olds - Babs Du Rouet and Buena Hit (I bred, but do not own)
3 year olds - Gallavant

I will have to wait and see if Framboyan and Benita Moon qualify

Fingers crossed!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One thing I am really, really proud of, is that I have 3 offspring of my super Sandro mare qualified for the final (foal, yearling and 3 year old). I wonder if there are any other mares going that have multiple babies on show!!!!

Oh no, how disappointing, do you know if they will go back down the line if someone says they are not going even if they have qualified.

Hopefully going fingers crossed lying in 2nd at the mo in 3 yr eventing gelding so hopefully might see you.
Eventing is on in the morning and it's all in hand so no lose jumping which i thought was bit strange not sure how they will judge with just in hand work???
Each age group has two go forward to a discipline final then two from that go through to a grand finale as 4.30 where a Supreme Champion will be picked.....
All quite exciting, i am off to catch a flight from Heathrow to SPOGA on sunday evening so had to ring to find out as much information as i could.

Look forward to hopefully meeting other HHO there!!!!

Where a horse is qualifed for two finals Jan will be contacting the owner to see which ONE they want to taek part in. To fill the gap in the other one they will go down the line BUT ONLY INNTHAT PARTICULAR CASE. However, at the last count there wer 14 double qualifers as follows:

Senior colt foals
Ducal Demonstrator (D and SJ)

Juior colt foals
Qintessential (D and SJ)
Devilish Fire (D and E)
On N Away (SJ and E)

Senior filly foals (D and E)
Future Gold Digger (D and E)
Millie (D and E)
Silvesters Darcy (SJ and E)
Future Illicit Opposition (SJ and E)

Yearling colts and geldings
Triple Crown (SJ and E)

Two year old colts and geldings
MFS B'Royal (SJ and D)

Three year old colts and geldings
Amour G (D and SJ)

Three year old fillies
Evita (D and SJ)
Gallavant (D and SJ)

but keep checking the lists as all may well change after Catherston and once Jan has heard from the owners of these animals.

The judges will be given the athlecticism mark (whoch covers paces loose in dressage, jumping paces (or actual jump accoridng to age) in showjumping and both in eventing so they will be able to use that information in combination with what they can see before them on the day to make their decison.

Seeing almost 160 horses loose (even in two arenas) would be pretty impossible in the time allowed I think you will all agree and also Addington tends to prefer a cage for loose jumping which is not the Futurity apprach at all so rather than have an argument about it , the organisers decided to leave out the loose schooling as otehrwise the three year old eventers and showjumpers would have been disadvantaged.

Continuing the stress on the athleticism mark in this way still ensures it will be far less of a 'beauty contest' than any other equivalent (are there any <ROFL>) event and allows positiev input from the original evaluators on the most vital point in assessing the competition potential of a sports horse or pony.

Brilliant thanks for that information, totally understandable about having the time to loose school and jump everything and makes more sense knowing they get the athleticism mark..... lets just hope we don't get knocked out now

It seems a bit unfair if an animal is of sufficient quality to qualify for two finals that they are not allowed to take their place in both, giving their place to a lower scoring one.

One point of clarification, if a horse double qualifies then it will be assumed that it will take part in the one in which it gets a higher score. Only those with identical qualifying marks in both dsciplines (there are a couple) will be offered a choice.

The reason for this -- and for not allowing double qualifying -- is becuase the purpose of the Futurity is to identify where potential excellence in future performance lies, so it must always be the higher score that indicates the most suitable discipline for the horse concerned.

On a welfare note, a double qualifed horse would also have to appear and perform twice (quite a strain for a youngster) and also the second time it appeared it would probably be up against horses that have not had to do this (ie are far less tired/stressed) so the judge would not have a common basis of condition of which to evaluate them.

You need to remember that the Futurity (and the BEF) always has to take in the bigger picture and the Futurity process is designed to be as stress free as possible for the long-term benefit of the equines involved. Human competitiveness and a pride in the stock that the breeder has produced is understandable in such a prestigious event but it should not be allowed to get in the way of horse well-being at any stage of its life, especially as a youngster.

Oh, I agree 100% with you on the horse's well being but I wouldn't have thought two classes would be over stressful although I take your point re being against those that may be fresher.

Excellent judges btw.

We are *wibble*.

Look out for a little grey mare with and even littler bay foal. Am washing my traiiler tommorrow specially for it - Dad thinks we should make the effort so we fit in with the 'big boys'

We don't bite, Callie might nibble though!

Shame we dont get to loose jump the 3yos but totally understand why its not possible at that venue. We are qualified with Portia I think in the eventing fillies section. Don't know whether we will go or not.
Judges are a little different to what I was expecting, but gla dthey did get Carl in the end as thats a great headline name, and really exciting to see Yogi judging the eventers.

Towerequine King's Ransom (or Hamlet). Dark bay colt with the big bay hunter mother - sj section.

Congratulations Cruiseline on qualifying so many of your foals, especially rewarding when you have 3 from the same mare. Is she in foal again this time? - Next year we'll hopefully be entering our colt as a yearling, his sister as a 3yr old and new half brother/sister foal so will be v interesting for us to see how they compare.

Thank you, I am very proud of my girl, she in not in foal for next year

I decided that the foals were getting later and later so after she missed, I decided not to go again. to be honest if she was in foal, I don't think I would have taken her to the final, as I think is is quite stressful for broodmares.

There is also a broodmare championship, I hope they will allow me to bring in her 3 daughters that have all qualified for showjumping.

Hope to meet you there
