Vids of Ed SJ at addington.
First is before starting training, second is after a couple of sessions where I had to get him much more forward and in to my hand.

Both rails in the second vid completely my fault. Forgot the double had 2 strides and cocked up the turnin to last but one fence then held half a stride to long. My excuse is I walked the course over 4 hours earlier

and after....still a long way to go but atleast he's taking me to fences

What a difference. He looks much better in the second one..... what class was that? 1.10m open??

He made it far easier and you looks like you were enjoying it being taken in, its a nice feel isnt it

Did feel so much better. He was definitely taking me to the fences, perhaps a little too keen on occasion but that was the instructions from the master 'Ride him forward ALL the time but must be in to your hand'
Now we just need to get a little harmony in to the equation.

Class was 1mtr but half the fences were 1.10.

I actually liked the first vid better

Or maybe I should say - if the oomph from the second one was added to the 'control' of the first one it would look nice. I too like forward going horses but on the second vid it all looks all over the place - sorry, it's not really a critisms as I am sure that creating this eagerness in your horse is a part of the training - just an honest observation.
There are a few really nice looking jumps on the first video

No need to appologise. I agree with you completely

My instructions were 'In the first class make him go forward in to the fences at any cost, gallop if necessary. In the second class you can then steady it up a bit and put him more on his hocks but still make sure he is working in to the bridle'

Sadly we didn't get to jump the second class (see Never, ever ever thread) as I think it would have been a mix of the best bits of first and second vids as you would like to see.

Roll on the weekend

Ah, shame you didn't get to do that second class then. All the best for the weekend !!

If I can add something I would say that when he gets a bit 'stuffy' and behind your leg these few strides in front of a fence, try not to encourage him with your whole body/hands etc, just sit very very still but give him an iron squeeze with your lower legs

Ok, I shall read Never ever ever thread now!

Again, agree completely. Not how I normally ride him. Cringe when I watch the vid but my excuse is old age gets the better of me when I've been hanging around for too long.

Agree with what some of the others have said. You need to take the energy from the second vid and put it into the rhythm of the first and then you've cracked it. A couple of times in the second, he got long and this caused him to take the rails out. He looks a lot happier in the second video though....and that was definitely a *strong* 1m

Thats the plan

before I got him he had only competed outdoors and tended to back off in doors.
What i want is him like he is in this vid but with another 20% energy. Shouldn't take long to crack.

Courses are always strong at Addington

This video is definitely the nicest!!! Do you think it's really the matter of energy? Maybe it's more down to finding the rhythm that will suit him and connecting his back with the front - he looks pretty energetic, just a little disconnected (i.e. he seems to have a good engine that pushes in various directions instead of consistently forwards) but then he might not feel so.
As to the age - it doesn't seem to matter in SJ!

Now you will understand that I am not in a rush to go Disc there. BN we are capable of atm, but i think putting him in the Disc too soon may be our undoing if im not careful.

I think is a matter of finding both. He can be a little quirky. Drop the energy even slightly below a given point and he backs right off, push it past a point and gets long and heavy.
Getting him consistent for an entire round is quite tricky
frown.gif

What I'm working on at the moment (between comps) is connecting the front end to the back end whilst keeping him forward but in a rythm.
He's much better than he was and getting easier by the day.
You are right though, he feels very different to the way he looks. My OH found that out when she got on him

There's no point doing until you're both happy with it
smile.gif
He's more than able...just watch your vid back and see how much room he's giving them
wink.gif

I know lol but dont fancy missing at that height lol theyre more 1.10m than 1m IMO lol
The pictures which were taken also give an clear indication how high he jumps lol like about 2 foot higher than required
smirk.gif

Its def something to aim for tho

He looked much happier in the second video. The more forward rhythm seemed to suit him, and the mistakes were genuine as you described.

Our ISH mare is much the same to ride, she is extremely careful in front and can back herself off, so up to 1.05 (PN) she is v consistent when ridden strongly forward. Occasionally at clinics she is asked to do a shortening exercise, and it really negatively affects her jumping.

Good luck with your next outing, it seems that you have found the key to his preferred way of going.

Hi, I liked the 3rd video, outside. He has energy and control and it all looks very nice.
We are trying to do the same at the moment. Shorten her up and asking for energy. It was all so much easier when I didn`t know as much because I think the more you learn the more you realise that you know nothing.

Wizzing around a 3`6" course was easy, but now it seems so much harder to get round a 3ft course.
