Just a thought, and bear with me if its a stupid one!

Even before I knew black pony was in foal I had noticed her acting a bit stalliony when I was near her smelling a bit sweaty. Mainly doing little in season mare/stalliony little woofles followed by a squee type noise, again in-season mare/stalliony noise.

Am utterly convinced foal is a colt, and this behaviour makes me think so even more. My last foal was a filly (different mare, same sire) and her mum was delightful all the way thro, she isn't delightful normally, very dominant & a bit of a bag!

Normally would never even notice black pony in season, think because she is not dominant so this squee-ing and stalliony-ness is only since she has been in foal, even before I knew she was!

Anyone else experienced anything similar?

no, very interesting though! Cant wait to find out what it is :)

One of mine, Ive found if shes having a filly shes a grumpy old tart. If shes having a colt, shes a grumpy old tart. Barren, shes a ....grumpy old tart :D

Interested to hear others views on this...

One of my mares has always had colts, she has always been very chilled out and although the boss in the field, never aggressive with the others. Last winter she became very grumpy and would bite the other horses in the field, I had a whopping rug repair bill in the spring - but she had her first filly!! No idea if it is linked but it was very out of character for her.

Interesting answers, basically will have to wait & see what pops out!

It may well be just the pregnancy hormones causing her to act funny, but am still thinking its because is a wee colt because she is so out of character & stalliony!

Anyone else found their mares act differently depending on what they are carrying?

My big old cob x mare used to act like a stallion, even mounting in season mares, when she was carrying a filly, she acts as sweet as anything and a total dope when carrying a colt!!:D

Whilst digging about on Sciencedirect I have found something interesting re foal sex & mares behaviour. Basically the paper shows that pregnant mares that showed estrous (sp) behaviour in early pregnancy were all carrying fillies.

So although this doesn't answer my question but it does seem that sex of foal can affect the mare....

And anecdoteally (sp) from you guys experiences, it seems black pony's wee one might be a filly.

Maybe I should do that most scientific of tests, the nail test :D

Link to abstract if anyone interested

My TB mare has had 2 foals in the last 2 years. Her 1st foal she was very relaxed and chilled out during her pregnancy and she gave us a colt. Her 2nd pregnancy she was very much neurotic, just silly over the slightest thing and produced us a filly. It will be interesting to see this year what she has as she has been quite relaxed about life so maybe she will have a colt :)
