So everyone knows that if a horse is showing ridden behaviour issues, the first thing to do is rule out dental pain, back pain and saddle fit.

I'm interested to know if anyone here has actually been in the situation of their horse being difficult under saddle, any kind of ridden problems, which were actually resolved once they had the dentist out? If so, did it resolve overnight or did it take a while for the problem to go away?

My young horse improved immediately as he had never had dentist before so had hooks ulcers and was really avoiding contact. He also started eating his hay Im so pleased I had it done early.

That's interesting. Thanks for the insight. So your horse was off his food too. That's a tell tale sign I suppose and gives more of an indication of dental problems and not just behavioural.

My 20yr old TB fought the vet while having his teeth done the first time I owned him, he was sold before the vet could sedate him to do his teeth, 2 yrs on, he was gifted back to me, fought the EDT, being 17 hh, no one can reach him when he puts his head up, another session was booked with sedation, his teeth were described as being very wavy, causing head nodding while being ridden, (true) vet and EDT came, my lad fought the sedation, resulting in him going down in the box, trapping the vets legs, the EDT has said he will work on my lad to overcome the fear he has, but given his age, he is unlikely to ever get his teeth right

My TB came to me at five he had been a tricky naughty horse in training .
He's a beauiful type so ended up being retrained for eventing he went well at first but then downeD tools again at that point I bought him its a long story' but eventually we found he had a problem with one of his teeth / jaw .
He's a different horse now .

yes i know 2 horses. one we took on that did not like to take contact at all- previous owner said he had always been like that and teeth were 'up to date'- surprise surprise when we got the dentist out they found many sharp teeth, needed sedation, after a week off after the dentist he was much much better and did not object contact as much.
my friends horse has started to put her head up in the air again on hacks, something she hadn't done in ages, had been 2 years without dentist. dentist founds lots of sharp points and had to use power float. head lifting stopped after that- it was clearly pain related.
