Can anyone recommend a natural horsemanship trainer in Kent? I'm thinking about sending to Jason Webb, but am quite put off by the £350 a week rate!

I'm looking for someone either to come and ride my horse at my yard, or to send him away for training. I'm not looking for a straightforward horse trainer or producer, as we do that ourselves, nor am I looking for someone who does groundwork, but someone who will work through ridden issues. The horse in question is an ex-showjumper who has had EVERYTHING checked physically - vet, dentist, osteopath etc, and is fine to hack (jumps, gallops, canters, everything without problem) but is a pain the school I think derived from bad training in the past, being overbitted and ridden unsympathetically. We've done all we can manage, but I need someone who can get inside his head! He's not dangerous, no one's fallen off, we've just reached a bit of a brick wall with his schooling.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations...

I can thoroughly recommend Jason Webb. Although on the pricey side he's done an excellent job with my young welsh d. He was originally send for backing last year and was ridden by me during the summer. He then had the winter off and went back to Jason's in June for a 2 week refresher course as I suffered a huge confidence crisis and didn't want to pass this on to him. Jason was great and the handover session at the end was great. Feel free to PM if you want any further info x

Thanks - I've seen him work on loading issues and was impressed, and have heard other good stories too. My main concern is that I don't know exactly what's wrong with my pony's brain, so am a bit reluctant to pay £700+ for them to potentially say 'sorry, can't fix him!'...so if anyone has experiences with Jason helping a remedial/problem horse that would be interesting to hear about!

He does get a lot of remedial/problem horses in and a few were in for re training at the time mine was there, one was ridden out with us on a small hack and another being worked in the school along side us. So was interesting to see how the various issues were dealt with. I can say the horses were dealt with the utmost respect and all the staff took the time to explain what they were doing and why. He also does a lot of desensitising and ground work to try and establish triggers as well. I do believe he also travels to individuals but again think it's pricey if he does x

Oh cool - I think what I may do, as I'm not too far away, is either take him up there for session or go along and watch some of the remedial ones! Thank you

I don't think JW has ever come across a horse he couldn't do something with. He is very ready to think outside the box when more conventional methods aren't working, and so even the most complex case can be improved even if it can't be 'fixed' altogether. You wouldn't be wasting your money.
(No I don't work for him :D)

Jason does one on one clinics at his yard, I think he charges £65 for a 45 minute session. Something I was thinking of doing with my youngster :)

So ,basicly what you want is to get this on the cheap. £350 a week for remedial horse handling is not expensiive . Get smashed about by a horse a few times and reconsider.People wo deal with these problems dont simply blow pixie dust up their noses ,but have to take life and limb in hand and face everybodyelses screwups.

Not at all, and we've been getting 'smashed about' by someone else's screwup since last December, I run a training & livery yard and have backed and fixed plenty of horses but this is the first one I've been at a loss with. I do think that with JW that a lot of the price is linked to name/level of fame and while I'm sure it's worth it, not all of us have £700-1400 to spend on trying to a fix a horse (that cost £200 in the first place) - I am seriously considering it but want to have all the facts first and be really sure it's the right thing to do as I don't have that sort of cash just sitting around spare.

I think I might take him up there for the £100 horse assessment with Jason and see what he thinks...
