Mmmm let me think about this, asked someone to turn out mine one day "forgot". I have now looked after their horse for 2 weeks (no pay) and its just been "extended" via text, no please nor thank you, for another week. Have I answered my own question as in the title of this post? I am not happy.........I believe what goes around comes around for bad things but it never seems to for good things so alas I will be left with noone to look after mine when I need it. Sorry, first and last (cant promise) rant over.

reply by text to them, stating that two weeks was fine, but you have other commitments and can't do it any more. If they are not going to do yours for just one day then they can find paid help to do theirs for the next week.

Text back and say that's fine, you charge £7 a day.

Text back and say you are more than happy too, but you will charge £120, to include the 2 weeks you have done allready - £40 per week for horse sitting is not a bad wage!

Am I missing something here - what have they been doing for a month that means they can't look after their own horse?? Sounds like they are too irresponsible to look after their own animals. But agree, you should definitely charge - at least the going rate (which where I livery is £10 / day).

Are you saying you would have to depend on this person to look after your horse if you were away because there is no-one else ? If so I would reply to the text but make it very clear - say yes I will look after yours on the understanding that when I need you to, you return the favour for mine - which means you have to remember to turn it out.
At least they will then know where they stand and you wont feel as if you are doing something for nothing.
However, if you dont need them to look after yours I would just reply to the text and say no, sorry !!

Yep, as you say you've answered your own question!

Welcome to my world. I am a lot wiser than I used to be though. Looked after a "friend's" three horses for 2 weeks through winter - bringing in, turning out, mucking out etc etc. She had to look after one horse for me for 2 weeks in summer when out 24/7 - and when I got back he had got thrush as she hadn't even bothered to pick his feet out let alone brush him. Grrrrr

I would say no to extending this two weeks - or as others have said charge her.

I take in and groom my friends horse when we both have a lesson, mainly as if she did it would take us longer to get ready, plus she lets me use one of her saddles on my horse. She would let me borrow her stable to, but I would clean up after my horse. And I know she would try her best to repay the favour.

That girl you are helping really doesnt appreciate you! I would jsut say that you have more on your plate and dont have the time to spare any more.

mmmm now i feel a bit unfair, its not really her, she is on hols and her bf was meant to take over but as suspected he hasnt and didnt even text me, he text my girlfriend who isnt looking after him - prob too scared of me. i dont want to sound mean and unhelpful and am not slating anyone, just upset at how its been "assumed". we have been allowed to ride him as much as we want but it still means tonight i have to go down again, as i did again yesterday and do alot more than i should have because mine is all done and self sufficient tonight apart from tlc and check (im sad and go down at least twice a day but thats my choice and not needing to be tied in to and i wanted a quick visit to get a night in!). no i wouldnt be beholden for care from them for my horse, lots of lovely lovely others to help. thanks for your support everyone, appreciated.

I'd be abit upset that they didn't say please or thankyou, but otherwise I'd be happy to have an extra horse to ride and look after for a week, I'd probably hope they never came back! Enjoy the horse while you can.

Oh dear that's a bit pants, you just want someone to say please and thankyou really, it's just nice to know that people appreciate you. Oh well I hope you're enjoying riding the horse!
