Left for Aintree last Wed. I estimated about 5 - 6 hours but it wasn't too bad and only took 4 1/2 hours even with a 15 mins break in the middle. So arrived at round 4.15 with Langside following me
Tucked Charlie into bed after a little walk around, and found out we were in Aldiniti's stable (although it didn't do us much good).
Thursday - Woke up bright and early for the 90cm warm up. Watch a few go and thought half the horses would do very well on the race track, i've never seen people go so fast. I was 70 odd to go so left to tack up thinking that 40 before me would be plenty enough time even though they are going quite fast. Got down to the warm up and noticed only 4 before me
how do you get through 40 in half hour. Anyway went in a did a lovely clear but not fast enough for a placing.
Next was the 1m Qualifier. Left plently more time this time round and warmed up properly. Jumped ok, just had a stop at the water tray.
(this was after some stupid idiot went across the practice jump as we were in mid air, so landed pretty much on them and throwing a shoe off in the process, so charlie was very nervous after).
Friday - then it went all wrong. It was the second qualifier. Went in and i think he was still flightly after the practice jump on thurs, but he stopped at the water tray again, so gave him a wack on the bum as he should know better by now and he jumped it before. Then he had a temper tantrum and just ditched me on the floor, so not impressed. Anyway got him outside and thought i might tire him out a bit by going on the gallops.
The gallops were just inside on the race track. He went all out twice round the track and wasn't even blowing. But as i was, i just admited that he's getting to big for his boots and too fit (don't know how, i don't keep him very fit) and called it a day.
So fri night got quite merry (ok drunk
) and came home a day early.
Wish i'd done better, but hey that's horses for you. And can i just say the people up there and the competitors were so friendly and lovely and couldn't do enough to help, just wich it could always be the case.
