This weekend I made a pretty momentus decision, its a little bit scary... Well quite a lot scary and in many ways has been coming on for a long time, I always knew I'd have to face moving away from Cornwall at some point but never thought I'd consider going so far.

I'm being pretty sensible about it, and have given myself two years to get my buisiness up to a really good point, its run over the phone and via the net so once its up, running and stable I can go pretty much anywhere I want and I've decided that it will probably be ireland! I haven't completely ruled out Scotland or Wales but I think it stands a good chance of it being ireland. I feel like I must be completely bonkers to be considering such a move, but once my buisiness is ticking over well financially i should be pretty comfortable, it's the best place for me to consider buying a nice small holding and I think it will give me a much needed fresh start. Ben will of course be making the journey with me :D. I will have to pack his armbands for the trip over!

I felt really bad the other day when I told my parents... Waiting for the impending doom from them saying it was a crazy idea... But they were really supportive and think its the right thing for me to do. I don't think I'm ever going to feel safe from my ex if I continue living in Cornwall, im costantly living on a knife edge here, looking over my shoulder and holding my breath when i check my emails/fb etc and I want to be able to walk/drive around and know I'm completely free of ever coming into contact with him again. I know I could up sticks and move to pretty much anywhere I want to but I feel that if I am making the move and Benjamin is coming with me (this goes without saying) that when I make the move I want to buy somewhere I can have him, and settle somewhere that's fantastic riding country.

So peeps, it sounds pretty drastic, and a lot is to do with a fresh start, but its also going to enable me to get the place of my dreams so the plan is that in two years time I will be settled in Ireland! Pretty pointless post really, but I just wanted to share.

Thank you :D its very scary but exciting too! Mum and dad love Ireland, so I know I won't be short of visitors, if the business was settled enough and cash wise it was possible I'd be going tomorrow! But I need to establish the business so the cash flow is stable, and I have some existing books to take a mortgage out, but I started window shopping this weekend and it can't come soon enough! I saw this one place, and could just see Ben and I there. I was even online looking at the prices of furniture over there!!!

Good luck! But just as an FYI, if you don't want your ex to know where you are or are going I would remove this from a public forum!

Oh don't worry, he would find out where I'm going anyway but he wouldn't come over to Ireland... He's far more of a chancer as in he will only bother me if I'm within a relatively close distance. It's far more along the lines of if he 'sees' me in town or driving around, he becomes a wierdo and he pretty much lives in his own little dream world, I doubt he'd even believe it were possible/happening until he actually found out I'd gone!

For me, it's more about peace of mind, I'm looking forward to planning and living my life out of the shadow of the past :D

Well, it's a buyers market at the moment ;) Check carefully, although we live in rural Ireland, there is virtually no off-road riding where we live, even though we are surrounded by fields it's all farmland. Not a problem as the girlie is retired. Happy hunting.

I'm currently trying to buy a place in Ireland too. It's where I was born and it felt like time to return. I've also got a two year plan ..buy this place then gradually cut my links with the UK. Bank is taking ages with the mortgage offer though so trying not to get too attached to the idea until we know its really possible. Good luck with your property search. Do you have a specific area in mind?

I've no specific area in mind, although I have seen a couple of nice properties in mayo and quite like the look of the area, but will narrow that down at a later date, my main focus is my buisiness at the moment, getting that to a fully prosperous and established level so that once I go out there I am able to relax financially. I suspect that further in I will take a week or two and go over there, look at a few areas and properties before I make a hard and fast decision on where. It feels really good though, to have a plan and I feel like I have a future if that makes sense?

I run an online bailiff advice company, the service provides free advice and support but depending on people's circumstance and wishes I work on their behalf for a set fee to stop bailiff action and negotiate a realistic payment plan for them.

I also design websites, but this is less of a buisness and more of a word of mouth thing... I will do it if someone asks me to.

If anyone has any input as to different areas in Ireland... Pros and cons (especially with regards to horses) that would be great :D

I really like co. Mayo. The land there always looks so much kinder to me than where I come from in Connemara where its mostly rocks and bogs. My friend has a place on Clare island and I'm planning to go for a hack there next time I'm back as someone on the stand has started a trekking business.. Well supposed to be starting it anyhow. Fingers crossed.

Yes .. I live in rural Mayo! Like I mentioned .. be careful where you buy if you want off-road riding. We live in the middle of nowhere but the off-road riding is non-existent. The roads are small and rural, but you will quite happily be meeting muck-spreaders, massive tractors, loose cows/sheep/ponies/horses/dogs that chase your car/horse etc .. it does happen. We have a smallholding - chickens/goats/1 retired horse/ducks. And then there is Mr fox! I wouldn't go back, but we have learned a lot - including about the Irish economy! If you specifically want to know about horses, I would recommend Equilibrium Ireland and maybe Gadetra (spelling) - I hope I don't offend them by mentioning them.

Thank you :D. I must admit that where I am I mostly ride on the roads with a couple of bridleways so it wouldn't be too much of a hardship, muck spreaders, combines and tractors plus random farm animals are also ok with Ben and I... So it's a possible thumbs up for mayo then?! :D.

Economy wise, this is why I really want the business secure before I move to Ireland as I realise that whilst its a buyers market out there, the cost of living is considerably more.

I will get onto EI and G and pick their brains later too :D

Hi QB, sorry to hear of your personal problems. If you're thinking of coming over here, please make sure to do your research - the grass is always greener, etc. and Ireland perhaps isn't quite the horsey paradise it's cracked up to be. Yes, there are gazillions of horses, but there are not nearly as many amenities (horse or otherwise) as there are in the UK.

Crap ... I forgot about Cortez! Sorry Cortez ... I don't know why I forget you and you are so right. Sorry again.

Hi, thank you :) I'm luckily quite used to living very much out in the sticks... It's what I prefer to be honest, and as long as I can jump on my horse and ride, I'm happy as a pig. Whilst I do hope to compete Ben, I'm not someone who goes out every week, to be honest, for the last 8 years I've been to probably an average of one show a year, so its something I could easily do without as long as I can enjoy my riding and my horse. For me, as long as somewhere there is a local little shop and a country pub, that'll do me fine :D

It's not so much, that the grass is greener, its that despite the financial climate struggling, because of how I work, and what my goals are it will afford me the best opportunity to achieve these. I do very much intend to do my research, but I'm certainly set on moving and settling in that period. I haven't ruled out Scotland or Wales, but my preference is Ireland closely followed by Scotland and then Wales. I'm used to the rugged wilderness too which helps :D

Have you considered Northern Ireland? Bits of it are certainly middle of nowhere-esque, but it's less of a huge change than mainland UK. Has NHS for example, whereas in the ROI you have to pay for all of it, even A&E!

I've totally not ruled any part of Ireland out, it really depends on what property and area I decide upon when d day comes :D
