When he was going around, I thought it was a hackamore, but then at the end I noticed that it was not - what the hell was it!? As was said, it was a proper piece of metal!!

Yeah - I saw that too and had thought it was a hackamore. It looked pretty severe!

it looked like he was riding in a hackamore and a gag from what I could see when I was there, I saw it in real life and was also wondering what it was! I think it may have had spilt reins/roundings between them

I think it was a hackamore and a snaffle with roundings connecting the 2 together, so you get brakes and steering! Seen it used quite a lot by SJers! His hands must be amazingly quiet!

Was that not a Hackamore????? I was about 30 inches from the telly trying to suss it out. It didn't look like a conventional Hackamore but I was thinking there was no way it was a bit!!!

It is a snaffle & a hackamore with rounding between the two & ridden on one rein.
It is basically like the myler combination bit but with longer shanks & so more poll leverage

What is the benefit of using both? I thought the main reason for a hackamore was a fussy mouth but it was a serious piece of machinery! Wonder how many kids we will now see at local shows with them!! (Probably none, but you know, it will now be fashionable!)
Saw less Grackles around too - will have to tell the fashionatas at the yard that cavessons are back in!

Finbarrs is cos he fights a bit and goes sweeter in the hackamore. Rob only adds the snaffle when extra is needed it seems.

Some horses need the snaffle for steering and the hackamore as brakes

Claire Balding remarked on the bit as Ben came out of the ring she did say it was a good job he had good hands as that was a serious piece of work!

I tried to work out what it was too, serious piece of kit but obviously effective in the right hands. Ended up so close to the tele that i stood no chance of working out what bit it was!
