Hi all, just a quick Ben update...

We haven't made it out and about for a while as I've been so busy, dear little beastie, has done nothing for about a month, last month we were going to go showjumping but at the last minute our transport fell through so I had to cancel. Anyhow, on Thursday I decided that I'd take him to a local sj competition, so having not ridden for a month, tacked the beast up and took him in the school for a quick jump yesterday followed by a walk off hack afterwards.

Other than flora show where we jumped a micro (think pole on the ground) clear round and a 2ft course and had four faults at the begining of the season and our first xc a few months back (at the same venue we attended today) we've done no other jumping competitions. Today we went out and competed without any calmer, and it was our first time ever in an indoor arena. He was such a dude, he has utterly blown me away, he chilled out by the lorry with his haynet and let me go and get a much needed cup of tea, he felt alert but not at all explosive, he warmed up well with the other horses in the arena... For me that is the biggest achievement of all. We decided to do the micro 15 inches and the 2ft, I wanted to do the micro for him to be able to relax and learn such a new environment.

In the micro, there was the option of doing a mini puissance type wall, you could jump it but if they refused you weren't penalised. He was a bit eyes on stalks walking into the arena, but once he knew what we were there to do and was over the first jump he was superb, and I though what the heck, let's give the wall ago, plus it wasn't optional in the second class now was the time to have a refusal, but he didnt he cantered forward and sprung it (I think he wanted me to touch the roof!) it was a ten jump course with a double, and he only flipping went clear, infact there were about 12 in the class and all made it through to the jump off... Drrrrrruuuuuum roll...

We got a gorgeous rosette, a medal and Ben got some extra strong mints!!!! I must admit, I did mean to just amble around the jump off and not attack it, but I got overcome with my devil horns and before I knew it we were doing steady but tight turns and flying the course and he LOVED IT!!!!!!!!! :D

Course two and we took everything again, same course but just higher, cat leaping the wall again! But he was stronger and even more eager and rhythm was an issue, I had to check him for speed and we got in too deep to three jumps and consequently 12 faults because of this so some more manners schooling needed at home before we go out on the second of September and do it again.

So proud of him though, first time indoors, no calmer, 10 scary new jumps and he was so brave, so powerful and so completely in his element. Photos haven't been uploaded to Facebook yet but I will post a couple when that's done...

Cheers for reading

Thank you guys, soulful, yes he is... He tries his little heart out, he simply loves his job so much and riding a horse like that... His enthusiasm is infectious!!! Never thought I'd be coming home with a first this season!!!

Thank you :D haha, I think I may have bruised his neck with my over exuberant pats of well done!!! ;)

P.s. Did you know you're avatar is upside down? :p

Fabulous, well done. It's nice to get a reward for all the hard work that we do. What a good boy he was.
Cheers, yeah he really was... I am so impressed with him... Especially having had a month off, everyone at the yard has to work so hard to get their horses in the right frame of mind if they have time off, but I've always been lucky with mine, but he's a baby, to remain so level headed despite his time off... He isn't allowed mints normally but by god he's earnt them so he's having them!!! I can't wait until the 2nd and we can do it all again :)

Well done... nothing like risking your horses legs and future soundness by competing an unfit youngster and turning tightly. Sorry to rain on your parade and all but fail to see why you went competing without putting the work in.

Aww bless you, you don't think that a horse can go out and jump a couple of small courses when he hasn't been ridden for a while, that's very sweet and naive, a horse who has had four weeks off from being in peak fitness will not be unfit, especially since he spends great chunks of his day, risking his own legs and future soundness galloping around in the field, keeping himself fit... Fitness never was an issue or a question, bringing him in after a month without riding was... With regards to his mental attitude, but he proved he was mentally up for the job on Friday... If he wasn't he wouldn't have gone.

And yes, we turned tightly, but tight turns in there are the equivalent to a 15m circle... In trot... Not exactly hardcore :p

As a side note, I've just checked and not that it matters but his break actually started on the 7th, that's the last time we went out for a hack so not as long as I thought

Thats great- we should all just leave our horses out all the time then and not bother getting them fit as sure, they obviously keep themselves jumping fit (especially as a heavy build).. That's why sensible people actually put some work in to protect the horse. Give it 4/5 years and you'll be posting on here about his time off due to soft tissue injury if you think this is a great way to work him and I'm sure everyone will be sympathetic....

Thank you!! I'm still buzzed about it, we had a lovely hack today to relax and then it's into the school tomorrow to start on schooling out the rushing. Space all booked on the lorry for a week on Tuesday... As I said he cat leapt the wall I think someone told him that alligators were lying in wait underneath it!! it's a bit blurry but here's a pic of that!

Super...well done. Ben is so lovely. I count it as a win if I can just take my boy somewhere and he remains calm, so to achieve that and a red frilly too is a real achievement.

Thank you! Kinnygirl... Stick at it... Saturday was the first time that Ben behaved like a cool customer at an event, before that he found everything quite exciting ;) something just clicked. Hopefully one day soon your boy will do the same :)
