A friend of mine is currently loaning with a view to buy a 17 hand mare with lovely looks and wonderful temperament. Temperament is a huge issue to this girl because of experiences with two previous horses.
The mare has a big body on light legs and small feet, but her worst fault is that she is bench kneed. Her legs are straight to the outside, the only place the knee changes the line of the leg is inside. She's also a little toe in.
She moves very nicely in spite of her conformation issues.
The prospective owner wants to do BE but is unlikely ever to go above BE100 and certainly no more than Novice. The mare would be well cared for by very experienced owners. And she is for sale by genuine people who have been known to the family for many years at an exceptionally good price, even in this market.
She is 8 but has been left to grow into her big frame and has done very little work in her life.
How much of an issue does everyone think the conformation is in this case?
All answers greatfully received.
