What are the benifits or plastic lightweight stirrups as apose to normal metal ones, are they better for different leg positions?

And what ones do you prefer/have?

I think the metal stirrups (ie: heavier ones) are better if you lose them riding as they're easier to locate. LW plastic ones would be better, I suppose if you do endurance or where weight is an issue. Racing perhaps.
I have flexi stirrups (a pair of Sprenger and a pair of something else cheapo; pretty much the same!

) because I get knee pain when I ride for any length of time. I adore them; they don't feel any different from regular stirrups (not wobbly at all) and no more knee pain

I second that- i have had knee problems since birth and i ride in the metal flexi base stirrups ( mine are william funnell ones ). I cant ride without them as its usually too painful to dismount.

I rode for 20 mins on a brief hack on a friends horse and the pain in my poor knee was awful. I never suffer with knee pain now to that degree not even after a 10 mile ride.

I rode a frineds horse who had the plastic ones and spent 10 mins trying to find the darn things with my fumbling feet.

I am very safety consious with my struuips and make sure they are big enought but i see so many people with small ones who cram their feet it and it scares me.

I cringe when I see people, but especially children, riding in trainers!

Plastic Stirrups are often used for 2 reasons:
1. weight reduction, you can actaully remove 500g+
2. they often have cheesegrater treads which provide better grip for x-country etc.

I must say I love my bend leg stirrups! Feel so much safer in them because of the lessened drag risk!

I have the rubber bendy ones which are quite nice. Dont feel much different from usual metal ones though TBH.

I personally dont like the feel of the lightweight ones coz I think the heavier ones keep my legs down where they should be! :P

Sorry looking through older posts and saw this one. I have the plastic stirrups as when I used to jump, my legs used to fling up, (they dont anymore) and when they did, I would lose my heavy SS stirrups but the LW plastic ones stay with my feet, so no more lost stirrups. This would happen to me at least once in every round, so I got fed up with it. Hope this has helped, even if it is late.
