My new 10 yo mare hasn't been ridden in over 6 months and hasn't come with any tack. Looking at bits I was just thinking about a nice french link snaffle to start with but someone has said I should start her in a waterford. I can't work out what benefit this would have. She's very alert but isn't silly and I can't imagine needing anything stronger than a simple sanffle.

Would like to hear any thoughts.

Well I use a waterford as its stops pickle leaning on the bit, and also hacking it stops him grabbing the bit and running!

It doesnt sound like its necessary if I am honest

Have to agree with Jess it does not sound like she needs to be in one.
Go with the french link snaffle which is also what my mare is in, and if you then think she is strong or leaning you can always go up to a waterford, i have one in my collection as i do think they are a good bit to have on hand.
