Benylin?

Have read on the Ventipulmin thread that some posters have used Benylin with success. My 26 year old, 14.2 Irish pony has had VP in the past but for the last two years has been doing well on NAF Respirator. Touch wood he won't be too bad until we are surrounded by rape again but if he does start coughing, what dose of Benylin would be suitable and does it need to go straight into his mouth rather than be mixed in a feed? He hates oral syringes!

Have a look at my post below where someone recommended it, they said 30mls but i had quite a few other recommendations as well. I would say probably best done by syringe, sorry!

Chancer had a dry cough earlier this year. He is never sick or sorry so this was unusual. I gave him some benylin - had done this on previous horse with vet's advice.

He had a 150 bottle over 3 days, just poured it on his feed twice a day. He is the sort that eats his feed without being picky, hence I give wormers etc in his feeds.

May or may not have worked, but his cough did clear up quickly after using it. It also did seem to do the trick on my TB too but she needed two bottles over six days.

Don't tell the shop it is for a horse, I made that mistake once and they said I had to have a vet prescription so went to the next store and said the two bottles were for me and my OH.

It was me that gave the Benylin post, I have used it many times over the years, I used the Dry Chesty one and administered 30ml a day for 5 days with a syringe. But as Theresea says you can put it in their feeds as well.

Many thanks for all the advice, I keep a bottle in for the family anyway and will get some more. I don't suppose there is any contraindication to giving Respirator at the same time - my vet recommended a maintenance dose of it a year ago, instead of Ventipulmin. When ridden the pony usually coughs once or twice after his first trot, and wheezes when the air is cold and dry, the Benylin will definitely be something to try if the cough develops into something unusual.

I have used benylin for years and new vet came out the other day to see one of the other horses and commented when he see the benylin that he uses it on his own horses as it is the best thing for them.
I use the non-drowsey and give 30ml by syringe, i did try actifed one time and my horse hated it, so for me benylin all the way
