Hi- I went to the pharmacy to buy Benzyl Benzoate today and was told it has been withdrawn from public sale because you can make a bomb with it! I use BB every year to prevent my mare from suffering with sweet itch and the related mites. Does anyone know of an alternative apart from the standard pricey preparations for sweet itch, that dont work very well anyway!
Thanks

You'd need alot of sudocrem to keep the flies away. I think furniature polish contains more of it, but like sudocrem, I wouldnt want to use it as a repellant.
Have you tried asking your vet and seeing if you can somehow get it via them?

I feed Marmite, and my horse was one of the few who didn't rub his tail last year.
Gold Label do Brewer's Yeast quite cheaply, which you can feed instead of the Marmite, and does the same job of keeping the midges off. It would be worth a try (and full of B vitamins, too!

Mmmmm, Marmite for my boy, worth a try. How do you feed it? What if he is hates it and pulls a face like the chap in the advert?

Ooops, just catching up here!

I put a squirt from a squeezy bottle in a feed. I can't be more scientific than that - I guess about two teaspoonfuls I doubt very much if your horse won't like it. It's savoury and salty. If he doesn't, though, then get some brewer's yeast and try that.

And, no. I will not remove the picture!

I think the Skin So Soft products from Avon have Benzyl Benzoate in them and work very very well, even if I am mistaken and it doesn't have it in.Can come in oils and creams which are applyed directly to the horse (oil diluted tho)

I read in a magazine just today about feeding marmite to keep the flies away, don`t know about midges tho, but it said to put 2 tablespoons in a cup full of warm water and add to feed.
