My current Musto winter coat is falling apart at the seams (literally) so I want to buy a new coat hopefully in the sale, for next year.

Can anyone recommend a good 3/4ish/mid-thigh length coat?

Ideally I want something waterproof, with a two-way zip, a waist drawstring or similar, some sort of zip or fixing so you can open the bottom to ride in and a detachable or small hood.

I've had a quick google but it seems there are a lot of short or long coats and not much in-between. Then when you do find something that looks like it might be similar there are only two photos, neither of which show someone riding!!

I've got a fairly good budget as I usually manage to make the coats last quite a few years so see it as an investment.

Any advice appreciated, thanks :)

I have 2 Ri-Dry coats; one is old style and not very flattering and one new style which is much smarter. Imo Ri-Dry makes the best waterproof riding coats; they are absolutely functional, wonderfully waterproof and very versatile. Customer service is really excellent and Ri-Dry are made in the UK too. I just wish they did more colours!! If they bring one out in burgundy I will end up with a 3rd coat...https://ri-dryclothing.co.uk/

My mountain horse Alicia coat is amazing and four people who have tried it on have bought it, but it might be a tiny bit long? Although I think there might be a shorter version. I really struggled to find one with a deep enough hood for my giant head 😂

My weatherbeeta kyla comes just above my knees, but I'm small. It's not a depths of winter coat imo though but I'm pretty nesh.
Uhip do a vast range of coats in various lengths. I have a long trench which is waterproof and you can buy layers to go in it. Ofw.one I think is the website with tons of photos ridden and not. However orders over 135 pay import tax as we're no longer eu members

There are two versions of the Alicia the normal and the long. The normal length is just above knee on me (5'7) - I think they call the shorter one the parka and the longer one a coat on some sites (that's what they've done on Horze anyway).

I picked up a Pikeur 3/4 length coat in a sale last summer at 50 quid. It's been THE best winter coat ever!
Totally waterproof, 2 way zip, drawstring for waist and hood (hood big enough to go over riding hat) plus vent zips for riding.
Looks a bit naff to me as feels plastic on outside but I'm very happy to recco.
Will look up which one when home later.

If your budget stretches I would look at Wellenstyn jackets. I’ve had mine for 10 years and it still looks new brand new. Waterproof and warm.

Have you considered a riding skirt instead? Knee length when standing (depending on height) so I presume similar when zipped apart and riding. I find it warmer than even my full length down coat as there are no routes for cold air to work its way upwards but there are non-insulated waterproof versions too.

I have sooooo many coats and jackets it's unreal, and I seem to live in them ALL! If you are looking for one to ride in, I can really recommend the Shires Woodford. I can get that over a Racesafe and it feels ok, not restrictive, I'm very fussy about that sort of thing! Lightweight, warm, good coverage, quite fitted, two good pockets for phone and treats, handy decent hood, vent at the back for riding and two way zip.

Wouldn't wear as a yard coat, apart from light duties (I'm trying to keep mines decent!), or in very heavy weather but it's a good everyday hacking coat. There's a photo online of Meg Elphick modelling one, on horseback, and that convinced me to order one! Not hugely pricey, so likely won't do a lifetime, but if well looked after would do a few years. Quite often on sale so you might get a bargain?

Are they breathable? Thanks

Not sure if you've already bought one but I have the lemieux long riding coat and its literally the best coat I've ever had, silky external fabric looks luxe, but wipes clean barely put in washing machine all winter. flattering cut completely waterproof, soft inside with lovely zip waterproof pockets and has poppers for riding down back or double zip to front. Only minor thing is I had to size up due to wide hip popping the magnets open at the back . Not taken it off all winter.
