I am looking into getting a 4x4 before the winter but I have no idea which ones are good to tow. I will have access to a trailer :)

What do you all use? We have been looking at Discoverys but i've heard they arent the best to tow with.

Well I had an oldish Mits Pajero SWB 2.8 Auto only cost me £2.5K 3 yrs ago and it was brilliant, but I needed more boot space so I have just bought a Mits Shogun Sport 2.5td manual its an 04 plate, low mileage full mits service history for £7K.
I tow IW510 with usually one very large horse and occassionally two..........definitly recommended and I too asked on here peoples opions.

Discovery's are fantastic to tow with, but everyone has an opinion on this type of thing (unfortunately!!) But what ever you buy, make sure you have enough capacity to tow the trailer and the horses, your kit, water and anything else you take with you.

Good tow vehicles are:
LR Discovery
LR 90 (for those of us that are real Landy people!)
Mitsubishi Shogun
Toyota Land Cruiser
Mercedes M Class

I'm sure I've missed loads, but the best way to check is find the model, go to www.parkers.co.uk and confirm the braked towing weight, max is 3500kg which the Disco falls into, vehicles like the Frontera and Terrano have 2800, which is good, but not always enough for a large trailer with 2 horses in it.

Most importantly go drive one! If you don't like how it drives, there is no point in buying it, different cars suit different people and its only by trying you will find out if you like it.

We've always towed with Landrovers- we've had Discovery's and Defender's which have always been fab, even when we were towing 3 in a large trailer.

We only tow 1 horse nowadays (in a light-weight trailer) so we can get away with a Freelander, however we wouldn't risk towing 2 horses with it- I think the Toyota Rav4 is in a similar class. Dad has a Ssangyong Kyron which seems to be doing the job well- it's a better towing car than the Freelander, however I don't think he's towed 2 horses with it yet so I couldn't say how well it does.

i have a kia sorento, which is great to tow, loads of space & nice to drive as well. it's won what tow car of the year a few times.
