I am starting my towing lessons soon and i am hoping to have my own transport by the end of the year but i just want to start looking into it as much as i can now.

What 4x4's would be best at towing an Ifor Williams 510 with a 17hh LW horse in it??

I am looking at a short wheel base 2.8 diesel shogun or pajero (sp). Would this be more than capable??

i have a 208td lwb pajero. it tows my 510 ifor williams fine.
i did a lot of research. a 510 trailer is approx 1 ton. 2 horses are approx 1 and a half ton. i would not go for a swb if you are pulling horses, it will be ok for ponies.
the pajero is a solid 4x4. it was hard for me as i had to sell my sporty bmw so that we could tow a trailer. i also wanted an auto diesel. they are very hard to come across. i did test drive a disco but did not like it. the pajero is not juicy either i use it every day and it costs me about £70 a week. the only thing to check first is that as they are imported some have not been converted into miles and are still on kilometres so the mileage might not be right. also the first insurance company would not quote an imported car. saying all of that you do get a lot of extras in the imports

I will only be towing one horse and because i am jumping from a little clio to a 4x4 i was hoping to get a SWB to start with. Think a LWB will be too scary

I did notice when i was looking that some were still in kilometers so thats handy to know about insurance.

I actually think LWBs are more stable. I took a SWB Shogun for a test drive once and found it very lively in the rain. Also, you get so much more space in the LWB, and they are easier to come by. Personally I don't reckon you can beat a Discobvery; they are cheap and plentiful, and lovely to drive.

Pajero's Rule !
grin.gif

I have had mine for nearly 2 years and it is fab, Mine is imported but I had no problem getting it insured. The mileage is in Kilometres but it don't matter as it is easy to work out the milage.

I feel so safe in it and it pulls my 505 with a shire x TB 16.2hh and a cob 14.2hh with ease ! I reckon it could pull a tank

Yip !
It's great innit.
I bought mine for £4500 It's an M reg so it will be about 11 years young and the lad who looks after it for me says it's ammaculate.

I am thinking about buying a new version at the beginning of next year I think they are even nicer.

Good luck hope you find one you like !

I wouldn't tow with a swb Pajero, they 'camber' far too much for my liking. Personal choice would be a Landy (not a freelander) or Toyota landcruiser/Hilux/Surf.
I've tried several over the years and the LR Disco tows effortlesly and reasonably economical too.

You would need to be careful with a Hilux / Surf (or any other pickup for that matter) as they don't have the same towing capacity as a full-bodied vehicle. The Hilux 4WD only has 2250kgs and the 2WD variant about 1800kgs. Obviously you'd be okay with one horse, but two would probably put you over

No-ones mentioned them yet but I tow with a SWB Nissan Terrano, 2.8TD

I usually tow my 17hh+ IDxTb in the 510 but occassionally have another horse too & it is absolutely fine, especially up our steep Devon hills. It's also easy to drive around and park when not towing.

For dual carridgeway or motorway driving I would recommend a Long wheel Base as the long and high vehicles overtaking you and/or side winds will make you sway.
