Just wondering what four wheel drive cars people might recommend, not for towing, but as a general day to day car to get to work and to throw the tack in the back type of thing. Just wondering in terms of reliability, economy etc what people think. My first choice would be a Range Rover for all the wrong reasons probably (well they do look nice

This awful winter has made me think I'd better save up before the next one and find something more practical than my little 2 seater... being towed out of the snow was not fun!

Kia Sorrento... Love it.

Sorry to hijack - but do you tow with your Sorrento? I'm looking for something that will tow one horse and hopefully isn't too thirsty.

The most well balanced for on/off road is the Nissan X Trail. Its capable off road if you need that but is very good on road too. The 4 wheel drive can be on all the time, auto, or switched off.

Its the only non LR / RR thing I would have.

I second this.

Or if you don't want to tow, a Suzuki Vitara, they sell quite cheaply and perfect for just messing around with.

And fully recommend them for towing. they won tow car of the year and our tows fantastically. not too bad price range either and they aren't gas guzzlers.

I like the Rav4, it's got me through some awful weather this winter, looks smart, is 100% reliable and less of a tank than some bigger 4x4's. I also tow a small horse with it just short distances and it's great

I've got one of the new shape Discovery's and I adore it. Its great for motorways - very quiet and comfortable etc, but can get down and dirty when required. It was fab in the snow and is rather good at wading too...

Drawbacks....well it is a bit thirsty and servicing isnt cheap but I love it

Thanks - I'll add it to my shortlist!

I'v got a nissan navara and I love it! Got 5 seats and then the back bit which is enormous for my dogs! Plus it's great if you need to pick up hay etc as you can just sweep it out as there's no carpet for it to get stuck into! Also it's totally separate to the car so when my dogs get in after taking them to the coast you don't have that horrible wet dog smell all the way home!

Only does about 27mpg and can say no to multi storey carparks but very easy to drive. They're classed as commercial so have to pay VAT on top but cheap tax, mine's 150 quid for the year!

Discovery 4 - I have one on order and counting down the days til its arrival!

Not Kia sorrento though - I had one for 3 weeks as a courtesy car whilst by car was being put back together after a crash. Very cheap feeling and very plastiky and not very nice to drive - mind you it did get me down snowy roads i suppose!

Another vote for the Rav4 if you don't need anything really heavy duty. I have one and it's great, a good size and I basically drive mine around with the back seats permanently down, it's amazing how much you can fit into it. Mind you it's not the latest model - looks wise I don't really like those.

Thank you so much for all the replies everyone, a lot of useful information there. I feel really grown up thinking about buying a sensible 4x4

Big landcruiser or nissan patrol , you see them everwhere that people need a 4X4 and not just want one.. in the desert , Australian outback, middle east war zones and africa coz lets face it you dont want to be too far from a garage in a land rover.....

I have a Range Rover to pull my trailer, my husband is wondering if we should change this year. He fancies a Mitsubishi outlander, any one here got one, not even sure if you can tow with one?

I would like a newer RR but ohhh the repair bills, my sister has a RR Sport from brand new and ohh it has been into the dealership more than I can count :-( So OH is not too keen to get another one sadly as ours has had so many issues also.

outlander not up to towing a horse trailer would be best to look at a shogun... much better or bmw x5 or merc ML perhaps:)

I luff luff luff my Toyota Surf!! Best vehicle I have owned (and I have had a few). I have had it for over four years now and it has hardly needed any repairs, it's great both off and on road, tows, heaps of room for the dogs, drives almost like a car. Higly recommend them.

Actually I'm rather liking the look of your tractor!

Ditto that, looks a lot newer than our two JDs!

I have a Disco ATM, but I prefer the japanese 4x4s, particulary Fourtraks and Troopers. They are proper off roaders, excellent for towing, very reliable, cheaper to buy and run than Discos and easier to manouver!
