My ponies have just started coming in at night (a month earlier than expected due to the weather and mud). I have had to bed them down on straw from the YO as I don't get paid until next week and can't get shavings. Due to this I have realised that both are my mares are a) eating the straw and b) very wet and smelly - they also have rubber mats which, IMO, makes it worse!

So I'll be going to stock up on shavings on Friday and would like suggestions on what you guys prefer - I have noticed that Bedmax is quite cheap ATM and fancied trying it. I have previously used Easibed which was good but involved a large initial outlay. I need something that I can create a deep litter bed without it getting too wet and smelly. I'd also rather use something specifically designed for the job rather than a by-product too.

Any suggestions? Thanks

Bedmax isn't terribly great for really wet horses.

If you can afford the outlay something like Hemcore will do they job and is meant to be deep littered.

If not if you can get hold of them Hunter shavings

bedmax is lovely to look at and fluffs a bed up, but i find best to mix with fine shavings in base to absorb wee!Bedmax is a manufactured product so not as influenced by market price trends as it is not a by product.

Do you know how many bales of Hemcore it takes to make a new bed? This is the problem with bedding products - they are all different prices but they might all have different 'values' - if you see what I mean and until you've tried them all you don't know!

Hemcore is WONDERFUL - I have used 2 bales on the bit my horse wees on, and shavings the rest of the bed. Though now, the price of Hemcore is pretty much the same as/cheaper than shavings

Around 8 -10 bales for a really decent, deep bed which IMO makes for cleaner horse and less mucking out. You leave the wet and only remove once a week/or longer. Doesn't smell either.
