Best barrier cream ????

Well after ponies cracked heel / mudfever / cut / god knows what, she is being turned out tomorrow after being in for a week. at the moment all i have is sudocream to plaster it with (it has scabbed over and she is on anti biotics from vet) she is going it in the only mud free field we have so hopefully shouldnt get muddy. anyhow, what is the best barrier cream people have found ??

Have found sudacream the best as it sticks like you know what!!! otherwise udder cream is a little cheaper!

MSM is even sticker than Sudocreme but I prefer sudocreme on cuts

Antiseptic teat cream.looks like pink bubble gum sticks like it too!Hard to wash off even with soap!Not too expensive either! vet recommended it when mare I had at time took really bad mudfever a few yrs ago.Worked a treat,she never was bothered again.

Epiderm, looks like very thick vaseline, its great nothing gets in it and keeps water and mud off atreat, put it on my hunters!

Best one I have found is Net-tex Muddy Marvel - stays on the legs of my Fells for a week and they live out 24/7 in very muddy fields.

Udder salve is excellent and better than the cream. You can buy big tubs of it from any agricultural outlet. Vasaline will also be really good in the absence of the the salve.

Sudocream will come off and not give any protection against the wet and mud - so don't waste your money.

The best thing you can do for your horse in future though is not to clip her legs, and never to wash them off. All learnt by me at the cost of my little horse.

Baby oil or veg oil will keep the wet out. Im using sudacream at the moment but getting in a right mess. Looks like the neddy has desicated coconut on his legs when he comes out of his stable!

Yes, I use baby oil on Amy's legs. However they are fully feathered now so the oil works really well.

I would want to use something more substantial on something with less hair personally.

im currently using aromaheel on Archies mudfever just whilst the last little bit clears up (finally) it stays on really well and also helps heel brilliantly, its wel worth the money imo. However ive got a huge tub of uddersalve which cost me £7 and will last me an eternity!! Im going to use that as a barrier once its totally heeled up.

PG for reference - and you may already be aware of this - the udder salve has the most fantastic healing properties. We used it on two horses that developed very odd rashes on their tummys - cleared up very quickly.

I buy Udder Ointment which I assume is very like the salve mentioned.

It's like extra thick vaseline. My mud fever prone horse hasn't had mud fever (yet - touch wood) in the two winters that I've owned her when using this stuff.

Cost me about £20 for a tub that lasts about 4 weeks. Well worth it. You have to wash the legs to remove it completely for the farrier.
