My mare is very wet, what works best for us is to have a megazorb base (ridiculously absorbent!) with a deep bed of straw on top (cheap to replace). Wood pellets work well but we found them too dusty.
Wood pellets, we3;ve recently changed over to Corley Bio pellets & found them to be easy & quick to muck out, very absorbant & significant;ly cheaper than shavings.
Vets in our area are offering the cushings tests for free, all you have to pay for is the vet call out. There is a new(ish) drug on the market, which I think is called pergolide, which cures/prevents (can't remember which) cushings. Ask your vet for more info.
WRT bedding, wood pellets, unsoaked could be an option? Although not very comfy, so perhaps a pellet/shavings mix?
Does anyone know if wood pellets rot down quickly? I have a very messy mare and all horses at our yard are on miscanthus bedding which is lovely, but I too am adding 3 - 4 bales of bedding a week. The bedding has to rot down quickly for the YO. to consider it. Thank you!
