Hi guys. I currently use Bedmax shavings for my horse who has a mild form of COPD and this bedding, although expensive, is working well for us. Lots of people on my yard are changing their bedding to wood pellets and highly recommending them. Whilst I like the idea I'm concerend about the dust content and the potential impact it could have on COPD. Are wood pellets safe enough to use or should I continue with Bedmax?

I found the wood pellets went really dusty after a while and stopped using them. We use bedmax for ours, one who has mild copd. I prefer the bedmax for sure.

Bedmax is too dusty for my COPD horse and wood pellets would be a definite no go. The vet hospital said paper or cardboard bedding only.

I use cardboard squares which I prefer to strips. I completely empty the stable once a week and wash out any dust or cobwebs.

If Bedmax is working then I'd either stick with that or have a look at Fitch bedding, it's the only bedding I'll use now despite having used shavings for 30 years.

I used chopped cardboard myself. I have never used shavings as I have a cob with masses of mane & tail that act as shavings magnets. It works for the breathing but it took me a while to find a system that worked without using masses - he's not tidy in his stable & very wet.

Cardboard is the least dusty bedding you can buy, my vets use that in their stables. I would definitely use cardboard for a COPD horse.

Wood pellets on their own are too dusty for my RAO horse. I used them with bedmax tho and was fine. I'm now using chopped treated dust extracted straw which is definitely less dusty than all and much easier to manage as he's a dirty pig
