I have tried shavings, flax, paper and straw and my conclusion is that there is no 'best' bedding they all have their pros and cons. I liked the flax for a messy horse because it made a firm bed that didn't move about too much on top of mats. The paper was cheap and made a nice bed but it goes everywhere! I get straw included in my livery whilst I'm at uni and I find it really quick and easy to do. I have it about a foot deep covering half the stable and it takes less than 5 mins to muck out.
Hemcore is absolutely brilliant. Very absorbant and i only use half as much as shavings so good value. This is my second winter using it and I will not change back to shavings or straw for all the tea in China

I use full shavings for one and a mix of shavings and straw for the other, both work well I think but the straw and shavings bed can get a bit messy.

Really? We never have this problem - although they do have a HUGE straw bed on top of the shavings.
AS you can see from the posts everyone has their own opinion & all seem to differ. Just work through the various ones until you find one that you are happy with. I use quality large shavings & I find that fine.
I've just changed to Bliss and it's working rather well with my three girls, still got the old chap on shavings......... But it each to there own really, you will find something that works well for you and your horse, you don't have to follow what somebody say's is the best..........
No, flax is not the same as hemp. Flax is also known as linseed which is what you may be thinking of - you may see fields of it growing in Yorkshire, it has a little blue flower. Hemp is part of the cannabis family.
One thing we did try recently was Nedz Bedz but that didn't work at all. But then other people swear by it, which was how we came to try it in the first place! So yes, as other have said, it is a case of a little bit of trial and error first as to what will work best for you and your horse.
One of mine is on Straw and the other is on Shavings. I choose straw for one of them as he is a messy grey and shaving, rubber matting and greys don't go very well, as you end up with a dun tri coloured type of pony. But both work well and do the job, which is the main thing
