i would use a bedding called Auboise its fairly new stuff(its a bit like Hemcore) its really absorbant and value for money, its a bit more expensive than shavings but i think you end up using less than you do with shavings due to its absorbancy, we sell it in our shop and loads of customers are saying how great it is!

I would say straw is the cheapest to get. We pay £1 p/bale and my friend only uses 1/2 bale per week. Mine are all on shavings and luckily ive found a supplier who sells them at £3.20+vat p/bale but I still use about 1 1/2 bales per horse so thats around 8bales a week!

At my stables we use woodchips. The stables without rubber matting, after laying down about 6 bags of woodchip, use 1 bag a week. The bags are about £6 each and are dust-free, which to me would be of high importance.

If you can I would lay down rubber matting, which means you use so much less bedding in the future.

I would say a good old thick straw bed would probably be the cheapest option. ( If your horse is not too dirty, has no breathing probs and won't eat it by the bucket load!) Works fine for me as mine does/has none of the above!

Megazorb - http://www.megazorb.co.uk/

its fantastic stuff - ultra absorbent and doesnt smell. you can semi deep litter it by leaving most of the wee in, and then it forms a solid base similar to a rubber mat, then you can put new stuff on top so you have a kinder base to the bed than concrete and you dont get through so much of the stuff.

I use Hemcore - cheaper than Auboise (which incidentally is made in France I believe) - same thing. This is my first winter and I have rubber mats but I have found it brilliant and cheaper in the long run than shavings and straw AND is isnt dusty. Once established horses rarely eat it .

I use shavings but deep litter through the week and do a full muck out once a week and bed up for the week. My 16.2 is in a 12x12 stable and we do great on 1 bale a week with the odd 2 bale week.

I use Woodypet which is the same as aquamax, mucking out takes me a few minutes per day, the wee gets mixed in and taken out once a week, the wet activates the bed. I would never go back to shavings after using this. I needed 9 bags to set up as I have no rubber matting but now I used 1 bag per week if that. I cant rave about this stuff enufff...

I used shavings for years however have just switched over to Bedrap- a bit like Aubiose- its great- theres loads in a bale, dust extracted and makes a lovely bed- you dont need rubber matting with it- ive never been keen on deep littering however with this you only need to take wet out once a week and I had to put a new bed down yesterday and I only used 4 bales! ...http://www.bedrap.co.uk/

Intersting about Auboise price as I shopped around last year - Hemcore from my local merchant was £6.20 and Auboise nearly £8. How much do you sell both for Scotch Mist as both have further to travel to you so should be cheaper for both.
