I am wanting to buy some boots for my ex racehorse. She has had two years off, now 6rys and being re schooled for general riding.

Lives out so I school her in field when ground is good and hack on roads lightly as I am bringing her on slowly so she is correct rather than rushing and spoiling her.

I will not be jumping her for a good few months and I already have a nice pair of sabre leather boots to offer the protection for that. As far as I know she doesn't really over reach or brush, and she passed a vetting but has a small splint so I am wanting some boots that will offer support rather than protection for when I'm schooling in the field and schooling on roads.

My mums arabian mare has the equilibrium stretch and flex boots and I've tryed reading honest reveiws on the support they do, but all people keep saying is they are rubbish for protection and it doesn't answer my question as they're not for protection in the first place.
Thanks for any help

Sorry but boots really do not support, there is no way that they can. Having said which, it's always worth having them there to protect against a silly knock.
My favourites are NEW (New Equine Wear), Style, and Ecogold. These have all stood up to a lot of use, been very protective, fit well, don't rub, are lightweight, don't absorb water, and don't heat up the legs.
I hope that helps a bit.

If you are going to be doing road work do make sure you have knee boots on, preferably with a boot that will protect the leg below the knee too.

This is especially important with a green ex-racer who could easily forget his feet.

My youngster wears Westropp Knee Brushing boots for road work and they have paid for themselves in prevented injuries. She doesn't brush but has gone down on her knees twice, each time she has avoided injury due to the boots.

I know some people don't like them because they are neoprene but I understand Caldene make a version that is vented. Personally as I only wear them to hack and I mainly just walk on the roads I take the view that the risks of overheating are worth the advantages of avoiding injury. If you were cautious you could use vented xc boots and traditional leather knee boots for almost the same protection.

Sorry, im not really wording myself right. I am just asking for boots more suitable for schooling rather than jumping and dont really need the padding and pads some boots have as she does not brush.
Replace support with just general benefits for schooling? I like the idea of the equilibrium stretch and flex boots being breathable, but would I just be better to not bother with any?
Thanks again

Also just read your comment Kat, I have never really used knee boots for hacking but some leather ones would probably be a sensible buy!

I use Professionals Choice Ventech Elite for general schooling my TB mare. They are neoprene but have a good ventilation system which means she does'nt overheat, fit neatly around the fetlock and hold their positon well, come in a ton of colours and are not too expensive. Plus they come in packs with both front and rear boots which I like. I got a great deal on Ebay for mine.

I love Equilibrium Stretch & Flex Training Wraps as I think they are more comfortable and supportive than most boots - particularly for an accident-prone/sensitive horse who is being re-schooled, so probably lacks fitness and balance.
