Hi,

My wife and I are looking for the best place to get a Lab puppy with working lines as we would be looking to train them as a gun / field dog. We are ideally looking for a black or fox red puppy.

Can anyone recommend a good breeder?

We are based in Cambridgeshire but are willing to travel.

Thank you

Are you willing to have one like, now? My puppy is coming from a breeder that would suit you but they're already 6 weeks. One black boy left.

There is a very very good highly recommended fox red lab breeder in the sawston area...? He is also a gundog trainer and offers lifetime help with training etc. Can't remember his name but if you go into sawston dog/gun shop they know him really well. Hope it helps :)

I was always told that there wasn't such a thing as fox or red by top breeders and that it was part of the yellow strain. Has this now changed in the KC?

I think you are right it is part of yellow strain, kc describe yellow as being from cream to fox red.

It seems to be a dirivative of the yellow strain, and is a recessive gene.In UK it is purely a working strain colour, but in the US and some parts of Europe there are show breeders developing excellent deep reds..almost as rich as an Irish Setter..but also good strong breed type.
Personally I think there is room for a bigger range of yellow, and as most "yellows" in the ring are actually almost white ,breeders do need to look to deepening the colour. As for "golden" retrievers..well most are white now. They used to be a lovely barley colour, and those left from working strains still are.
