There is a horse on my yard that has a low grade navicular type thing going on . I dont know the exact details, apparently it is not the navicular iself but a little fragment undeneath which sets up inflammation in the foot. Horse is totally sound on 1 bute a day, but whenever it's weaned off it goes a bit 'off'. Vet is happy for horse to work on bute but owner not as horse is still relatively young so worried about long term side effects and also wants to compete. Currently on a glucosamine based supplement, MSM and devils claw powder. I said I would ask on here if there is anything else worth trying?

I havent personally used it, but there is a supplement by nettex called subsitbute which is supposed to be very good

We use Global Herbs Bute-x for my laminitic gelding. At one point he was on one bute per day and as hard as we tried to wean him off it, you could always tell he was still a little uncomfortable. We introduced the Bute-x to his feed and within hours we noticed a marked difference in him. He has now been weaned off bute completely and only has a token half scoop of Bute-x in his tea at night now. Its fantastic stuff, with the added benefit that it isn't going to harm his liver!

Mine is on danilon and has been for a while with no side effects for hock surgery(arthritis).I also used a product called buteless with devils claw to help reduce inflammation.

Oh that sounds like a similar situation so will pass on info. Actually the horse may be on danlion already as I know they had a problem with it eating the bute. I think they would like to get it on something they can compete on. The bute-x sounds as if worth a try.

MSM is a powerful anti inflammatory and Glucosamine and Chondroitin have pain relieveing properties. You really need to check what level of glucosamine is curently being fed. A lot of products under dose quite massively which will have little or no effect on the horse. It should be receiving 10g Glucosamine, 10g MSM daily and if you can afford a product with Chondroitin in it you should be looking at 4g daily. Anything lower than these values will have little or no effect and equally if you do feed t these levels it is likely you will see a difference.
