Grey Mare needs a little calming help.

Very, very sensitive to sugar. Just about to stop the apple chaff (has a small amount of sugar).

We're going to treat her as a laminitic in terms of feed, to keep the sugars right down.

Heard good things about Topspec Calmer and Horse First Relax Me. My bank account would prefer the Topspec, plus it appears to have more in it (according to the blurb), but I'm open to recommendation.

we use the horse first for Tom when Ron goes hunting - does seem to help as he gets very stressed about being on his own, but with it he will stand in the barn and watch out/eat for a few hours before he starts pacing up and down the fence
 
I have tried magnitude which didn't really do anything. I also tried magic with not much difference. The global herbs supercalm has been the only one that did make a difference to my mare but I think it's really trial and error with different horses
 
I've had good results with NAF Magic and Hilton Herbs Temperamend. Unfortunately, I found it really was a case of trying different brands and seeing which worked for each individual horse, which can be costly!
 
I have had a lot of success with Equifeast's cool calm and collected. I have recommended it to some of my clients and know of at least 10 horses who have had a big improvement in their behaviour.
Very helpful people to deal with too. They really make an effort to make sure your horse has the right level of product and it's not particularly expensive either!

I'm trying not to think of the cost... It will be worth it to know the horse is happy in her skin :) :) *thinks where to hide umpteen hardly used tubs and potions*. D thinks it's because we've paid for her :rolleyes:. I'm pretty sure it's the sugar content of the apple chaff and the carrots (not had many carrots at all, but no doubt adding to the issue :eek::rolleyes:).

Debating the order of the list of the ones to research further and try. So far we are looking at:
Topspec Calmer
Horse First Relax Me
Equifeast
Magic
Hilton Herbs Termperament
Global Herbs Supercalm
...or maybe all of them at once! I'm joking :cool:
 
we found that nupafeed was the best for our boy although tis pricey . however we seem to be having the same results with bog standard epsom salts which are by far cheeper.

I don't know much about calmers MrsM but I was always told Applechaff as a chaff does contain a lot of sugar (17.5%) which I think people sometimes aren't aware of. If you need a sugar free chaff I'm now using Top Spec Top Chop Lite which seems to do the job though he's a bit fussy about it as it is so not sweet :)
 
I use magnesium oxide for my mare, its also good for laminitics as well. It's very cheap, about £20 a bag, and i'm only just half way through my bag, and i've had it a good few months.
 
NN thank you :). I've used the Nupafeed before (on other horses) and still have some left - I'd forgotten about it! Yes, it is pricey. Interesting that the Epsom salts do as well!

MD I really am a bl00dy twit! :rolleyes::( It had not registered that if GM was sensitive to the Speedibeat then she'll be sensitive to all sugars :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:. She was only getting a handful or so, just to get her vits in, but obviously it was too much. I need shooting. I'm waiting to hear back from her previous owner, to see what she fed her. I have a feeling that it wasn't much as she didn't need it per se. The Lite Chaff sounds good. I'm not sure how to check re. the sugars that are produced from the carbs (if that makes sense?); that was the issue with the Speedibeat.

J&R I know nothing of the magensium oxide in that form. Will go investigate, thank you :)
 
I think it's a minefield out there with so many products now, very confusing for everyone. I think it's hard to find anything that doesn't have something to work around! Hope she settles soon :)
 
I have tried NAF Magic - worked for a while

Relax me - couldnt get her to eat it!

Currently using Feedmark Steady Up and have had good results so far - she is still "tricky" but is a lot less anxious about things!
 
I have tried many calmers over the years -some brilliant some not - i would try a few drops of rescue remedy in feed every day - its fairly fast acting
