Horse is currently on NAF Magic, plus pure Mag Ox for hooves.

He is chilled 99%, but then things get too much and he likes to explode (violent head shaking where he sticks his tongue right out, flinging of front feet and bunny hopping, does this in hand and undersaddle), but calms down again afterwards.

It’s not a massive issue but I would prefer if he wouldn’t do it :D, it’s like something all of a sudden gets too much and he freaks.

Had a look at Global Herbs who do:
FireworX
Thoroughbred Calmer
Supercalm

Has anyone tried any of these????

I haven't tried any of those calmers but do order things from Global Herbs and i really like the website. If you go on the website there are some reviews on the products what people think of it so you could have a look at them :)

Just some calmers which i think are really good or which people have advised me to use ....
- Magnitude
- Feel Good 30
- Steady Up-Advance

Hope this is some help, and i hope your horse calms down soon :D

Let me know if your boys improves :D

Hi, haven't tried any on your list, but I use a pinch of dried hop flowers every day in feed, use this on a horse that gets tense in dressage arena, better if fed a small amount daily, and can be increased for competitions etc. The other calmer I have had success with is Blue Chip Karma liquid, not the cheapest but brilliant for occassional use, ie a dose the night before and one in the morning of a competition, it can also be used daily, and both are legal :)

naf magic is primarily cal mag, so feeding that and mag ox is pointless tbh as they will just cause an excess of magnesium that will then be excreted and thus wasted.

magnitude is also mag ox but just called magnitude as packaged by equine america.

potassium bromide can be used as a calmer but in excess is toxic.

depending on if your competing their is banned substances which do work very well such as valerian.

Have a look at the james hart solutions website. Transformed my mare beyond belief and I'm pretty sure they are the strongest herbal products on the market due to concentration. (Don't quote me on that though :p)
The problem with magnesium calmers is they only work on defficient horses, so if your horse's exitablity/edginess etc isn't caused by lack of masg they can't help.
Hope that helps :)

I'm not sure a calmer would help in these circumstances. If he is ok 99% of the time then I would say you are probably feeding the right calmer at the moment for him. Calmers don't really cure these sort of issues or dull the horse in any way, they just make the concentrate and relax a bit more, does that make sense?? When he shakes his head etc could this be a reaction to something, causing him to be uncomfortable causing the hoping about? Sorry if this isn't clear, have been up since 4.30 as not very well and have had a lovely hack already!! Think I will go back to bed now!!

just change hardfeed to mollichaff calmer, it has the magnesium, lemon balm and camomile - can't recommend it highly enough, mix it with a little speedibeet and it lasts a good few months and costs £8 a large sack:D Cut out carrots, apples and treats.

Must say I've been through all of the calmers, including oestress for moody mare - Topspec calmer was the best of the bunch if I were gonna buy again, but nothing works really tbh.
Oh yes and naf headshake relief works on my div Tb

I've fed Naf Magic, and also tried Cal Mag. Of the 2, the Magic was better, simply because the horse ate it! She sifts the Cal Mag out of the handful of Hi Fi, even when it's damp. Must be like eating sand.
