Best camera for action shots?

We bought a Nikon v1 for the olympics last year. It takes continuous shots with upto 60 fps.

We got some amazing eventing and cycling shots (road and velodrome) with no blurring.

Theres a newer v2 out now so you might get a bargain on the v1.

How cheap? A mini SLR would be ok, you can get one for a few hundred, otherwise you'd need something more powerful like a canon 7D SLR, which is about £1500.

My son has a Sony ax77, it's really easy to use and the picture quality is brilliant. I'll be taking it to the horse trials next weekend for a play. I've got an older canon eos400d which is a great starter camera, but I think they've updated those now.
It really depends on what you want to spend.

Only want to spend a few hundred max, so no slr cameras. theyd be too complicated fir me anyway! I just want to be able to take nice pics of my youngsters playing, and of me riding and later competing on my newly backed horse - so nothing fancy. Just fed up of blurry shots with my cheap compacts

Hello, I have a now ancient (in technology terms) canon eos 450d, you can pick one up super cheap now and I take pictures like this on it:

But really anything with variable shutter speeds will do you fine :)

You can pick up a used DSLR on ebay for less than £200 with a decent lens and usually a few extras like memory card. The big difference is DSLR's don't have the lag of compacts and even bridges. Really, really important for action shots and if you don't want to get complicated just shove it on auto! You also get a bigger sensor which will give much crisper shots.

There's just no comparison for anything where you need instant shutter response. I'd go for a DSLR, even a few years old, over a compact any day.

Definately!

I got a Canon 40D for £200, it has a sports setting for rapid fire so you can get a sequence of shots easily. It's the fastest camera in the mid price range, after that (at 8 frames a second) it's the 7D but a good second hand will set you back £5-600 :'(

I sold my Canon 300D on eBay a few weeks ago together with extra battery grip, carrying case and a zoom lens, for £120 so if you don't mind an older model (admittedly that's about 8 years old) then there are DSLR options available.

Oh I am looking too, was thinking along the lines of a canon EOS 600d. Will watch this thread with interest.

I have the 600d and I love it, its quite easy to use. The following pictures have been taken on it.

I also have a panasonic lumix tz8 which is ok, I mainly use it for diving now.

Definitely go for a second hand DSLR. So much mroe for your money and even if you decide you don't get on with it you will be able to sell it for pretty much what you paid for it.

We've got a Nikon D90 that we used for our photography business, its brilliant, the images are so clear. get a decent lens to to with it as well :)

You really do need a DSLR for action shots, and it'll take you a few days to figure out how to use it, but it becomes intuitive fairly quickly :) I use canon 7Ds for work, which, for the price, are great. I have a canon 450D too and I would definitely recommend it, as a small dslr it really does well. I've had mine since they were first released, 2008 I think, it's been battered about a bit and is still going strong, so definitely don't be put off buying one second hand.

This was taken on the 450d, it's had some pp stuff done to it, but you can see that it doesn't struggle with movement.

To be honest though, if it's a bright day, pretty much all DSLRs will get you a sharp action shot :)
