Need a car that is reliable and can tow our pony!! Must be under £12,000 ideally under £10,000. Would be a bonus if could tow two horses/ ponies. Don't really want a massive engine with poor miles to the gallon.
Really like the Honda CR-V does anyone have experience with these?

Thanks for any suggestions XD

I have a discovery, which tows really well.....I dont have any experience with the CR-V.

I would think that the better it tows, the lower the general fuel economy is going to be! I get about 30mpg normally and about 26mpg when I am towing with 1 horse on board.

I like to know that I can tow pretty much anything without having to worry about kerb weights/total weight/all that other confusing stuff!!

My mate got rid of her CR-V. It's weight isn't up to much at all and I think you'd be lucky to tow an empty trailer (if you found one light enough) let alone with a pony.

my mum tows with a land rover freelander 2.5 turbo diesel and it can legally tow 2700kg which includes the trailer (985kg) and taz (565kg) and molly (185kg) with all fully loaded we took it to the local weigh bridge with taz then back with molly to make sure it would cope with all tack etc in it too and just subtracted the difference

I'm really interested in the replies to this thread as I'm going to be buying a towing car soon too. What about the Ford Kuga?

magichorse, I personally think little 4x4s such as kuga, freelanders, CRVs, sorrentos arent up to the job of towing horses. A lot of people just go by "how much it can pull" without thinking about nose weight or braking. A lot of the little 4x4s are too light and often the trailer is heavier than the vehicle and that is super dangerous when it comes to braking.

Personally I would only tow with proper 4x4s with good nose/tail weight such as Navara, L200, Land Cruiser, Discovery, Shogun etc

I have a Discovery 4 and its amazing!

I would just check because I believe the Freelander is only 2000kg......again I may be wrong!!

JenTaz did you know you have to include the weight of the car, passengers, tack, water, dogs and general car contents in that 2700kgs? Also I thought the freelander only came in 2 litre? therefore can pull 2 tonnes? I might be wrong!

Nah it depends on the engine size as well, the smaller freelanders can only tow 2200kg i think but alot of people at my yard tow with freelanders, plus we only tow one at a time most of the time as we hardly ever go places together. Surprisingly the car tows really well after i read on here alot that freelanders were awful to tow with, but then we are upgrading soon as mum wants a 7 seater lol

like my post said we took it onto the weigh bridge with every thing in it, to make sure when fully laden that we were legal, nope ours is def a 2.5 turbo diesel that was the only reason mum bought it

I don't consider the Sorento to be in the bracket of little 4x4s with freelanders & kugas etc. I believe that some of the models after the initial earlier ones can tow 3500kg. Mine tows 2800kg (54 plate) , and I know they have a pretty good write up in general from people on here who tow with them.

We use a LandRover Defender with a Discovery td5 engine in and it could tow the horse plus the stable it stands in and more... but they aren't the most comfortable, although tend to be more economical than the new LRs such as Disco 3/4 or Range Rover. Alternatively, I've only heard good things about Toyota Landcruisers and I'm all for it because they are bigger 'proper 4x4s' [as I think someone else mentioned]. A LR Disco 2 would be my recommendation, but it is pot luck whether your get one that is remotely reliable =S

I tow with an Isuzu Trooper, its a 3.1 turbo diesel and does it effortlessly. Heavy rock solid car and made for the job. Tows an Ifor 510 with 2 big horses in and as others have said is "a proper 4x4 for the job" If you get it wrong with the weight issue the fine is hefty, insurance invalid and Im pretty sure you can have your license taken off you so check out carefully.
