Daughter at 8 years old has become obsessed with horses after being pretty indifferent for 6 years. I guess now she is old enough and strong enough to be able to do a lot more it has become more exciting? Has anyone else found this? Anyway she has had her nose stuck in all my old horse care books for a while however they are all a bit old (as in 30 years old with v funny pics and some old fashioned practices) so can anyone recommend a more modern childs book about caring for and riding horses and one that goes beyond the basics a bit more.

( not sure if this is a good idea or not as she is now questioning every thing I do and taking twice as long as before - " mummy, you should hang your bridle up like this", "mummy, you haven't cleaned her dock yet so you can't ride", "mummy, your tack is dirty - you need to clean it more" yes darling daughter here is the saddle soap, off you go)

I still think the best book is the Pony Club manual - newly revised and easier to read than the old versions. The Pony Club bookshop do lots of good books and DVD's for children (and adults!).

I don't think the pc manual is that good until they're older.

You want something aimed at younger kids - my first pony types.. Can't remember the one I got for stepson aged 8, but it had a gorgeous dapple welshy on the front that looked like his pony!

Pony club website has a good prep area that is meant to be good for younger kids..

What about Christine Pullein-Thompson's "good riding" - don't know what it's like but I had a couple of her books when I was a kid (there were some quiz ones I think) and I liked them very much.

I've found its tricky at that age. Mines 7, but having been round horses all her life the books aimed at that age are too basic, all seem to be aimed more at children who've had little involvement. We tend to look at a range of stuff really & am considering the pony club manual. We get pony magazine & she likes their website & the pony club one. Her fave book at the mo is 'the encyclopaedia of horses & ponies' by tamsin pickeral. It's a few years old, someone gave her it, but loads of fab photos & breed stuff & facts about early horsemen, & worlds oldest horse etc as well as stable management. Not a kids book but she reads it easily enough.

Understanding Your Pony by Lucy Rees (author of The Horse's Mind).

A book aimed especially at the young reader, showing how to build up and maintain a special relationship with a pony. The author shows how to understand a pony's natural likes and dislikes, fears and habits, as well as explaining a pony's view of the world and our view of the pony. She goes on to interpret the meaning of specific signals and expressions that ponies show such as ear and tail movements, facial expressions and body posture. She explains how to tell whether the pony is afraid, angry or even ill, with the use of actual examples. However, it is not just the pony that gives signals, so do we. She examines these signals we give to ponies together with a study of those areas in which a pony's perception is superior to that of humans - their sense of smell, hearing and sensitivity to body language. Finally the author examines the way we ride and handle our ponies and assesses why some techniques and approaches may work better than others.

A wonderful, wise book, in my opinion - very readable by adults too. I think the chapter titled "Bullies, leaders and friends" is a must-read for everyone. Highly recommended!

I got my PC manual at about 8 and never had a problem reading/understanding it.

I guess it depends on how much of a 'reader' she is.

I also had nice big books with photos in that I liked too.

My crazy step aunt threw them all away or you'd have been more than welcome to them OP :(

That looks a fab book fburton, think I'll be ordering it! Usually they're of the variety ears back= not happy, I very much like the idea of one about body language of people too, good reader that she is, adult books on the subject are a bit too hard going, so up till now we've just done it practically. Thanks for the link.

Tilly's Pony Tails by Pippa funnel is meant to be quite good. It is like a story book but it doe shave many wips and things. E.g about cleaning tack etc. Got this for my niece as it teaches them things while being a fun sotyrbook to read :))
