i need to put more condition on my pony as he lost more weight (he has been checked by a vet and is ok otherwise), the groom at my yard suggested some kind of conditioning/show mix.

He is currently on Alfa-a light (thinking of changing this to normal alfa-a) and spillers pony nuts as well as garlic and cod liver oil. I have beem browsing the feed sites and i am the first to admit i am no expert on this. A friend suggested Winergy condion, or do i go for some kind of mix?. He is normally a very good doer and i think this winter has just taken it out of him a bit. Anybody got any advice on what they think would be best

He lives out but is very well rugged and has ad-lib hay as well

Cookies and wine if you got this far and thanks in advance

Baileys Top Line Conditioning Cubes.
Cannot fault it.

Only other one i've had is TopSpec Conditioning Flakes and i also highly reccomend that too

They're just a bit more expensive

I had no gd effects of Baileys No4 the condition cubes, now use topspec conditioning flakes are fantastic but i have found them heating, and also topspec cool and condition cubes are fab!! Also lots of oil, linseed and boiled barley if not hot headed.

i was looking at the baileys no4 and have also considered a balancer, im not fussed about fizziness but would prefer it if he wasn't an absolute loon, would one have more energy than the other, sorry to be a pain

I have had slightly bad experiences with balancers and loopiness so tend to stay clear!! hence all mine now have the cool and condition and then flakes if more energy needed!!

You only need to add a balancer if your horses main feed doesn't contain the vits & mins it needs.

It's going to depend on your horse, what is good for some may not be as good for others. This also works the same for how it effects them in terms of fizziness.

A couple of other conditioners you could look into are:
Allen & Page - Calm & Condition
A & P - Weight Gain
Spillers - Conditioning cubes or mix
Dodson & Horrell - Build up mix or cubes
Winergy Equilibrium - Condition

i am thinking i might try baileys topline condioning cubes, does anyone know if they are quite 'fizzy'

Sorry i have so many questions

If he was mine, I would be changing the Alfa A Lite to Alfa A Oil (which actually contains as many calories as some conditioning feeds). You do need to weigh your Alfa A Oil though to ensure you are feeding enough - as it looks more than it weighs! If you like the Spillers nuts that he is already getting (which contain 8.9 MJDE/kg), then you could swap to either the Spillers Response Slow Release Cubes (11 MJDE/kg) or the Spillers Conditioning Cubes (12 MJDE/kg), depending how much weight he needs to regain. If you think he needs even more calories than that, then look at Baileys No 4 - which has 13.5 MJDE/kg - but I suspect that would be overkill given the fact that he is normally a good doer and is on a fairly low cal diet at present.

I can't tell you an honest opinion on this because Mistys fizzy atm anyway because she's been in a hell of a lot.
All i can say is it hasn't made her EXCESSIVELY fizzy.

If you're going to try this, feeding it little and often is the key. Split the recommended daily amount into 2 or 3 feeds if that's possible.

wow thanks TGM, im not too keen on the spillers pony nuts as he is eating lots at the moment and still loosing weight so think i will try the no4.

Thanks again everyone, this is a great forum

he is fed twice a day anyway so i will continue this, cant feed him more often as i cant get to the yard, and he wont let the grooms catch him anyway (little horror)!!!

He is an entusiastic ride normally but he is usually sensible so not too worried about fizziness, guess time will tell

Thanks for all the advice everyone

I would avoid cereals, especially if he is a good do-er normally. It is safer to use high fibre and oil feeds first and only cereals if absolutely necessary. The horses digestive system is designed for fibre rather than cereals. Most conditioning cubes contain cereals, except for top spec ones. Suggestions for safer feeds, especially for ponies, are unmollassed sugar beet, topspec conditioning cubes, alfalfa or alfalfa with oil, saracen equi jewel. You could also add some ready cooked linseed. Unmollassed sugar beet is the cheapest, equi jewel is more expensive but you only feed small amounts.

Definitely Baileys Number 4.

If he's eating lots and still loosing weight then there is a chance he's not utilising his feed properly. Try NAF Pink Powder. There's another thread on here about PP at the moment. I'll find it for you.

ive just started using this new feed called coolstance it is amazing i have seen a noted difference in 2 weeks and it is completely non heating (my friends ex racer is on it and is the only feed that doesnt not send him up the walls) it has coconut in it and is the strangest thing i have ever fed, unsoaked it looks like sand, roughly half a scoop mixed in with his normal feed should do it. you soak it separately in two kettles of boiled water mix it (giving it the appearance of bulked out wet sand) and feed either instantly or after 10 mins

it is amazing google it

he is currently now on half/quarter scoop of coolstance, scoop mollichaff original and scoop of build up cubes. when i got him a month and a half ago you could count all his ribs, now you can still count some but not all and his hip doesnt dip in at the top anymore only the bottom

keep going on what she is already on but change or normal chaff to alfa a oil and her cod liver oil to linseed oil and give more of her spillers if this does not work add some fibre beet. have you wormed and had her teeth checked? does she have ab lib hay?x

I've just put my horse on to Alfa A Oil - because he's been dropping condition. Slightly different situation to you as I am concerned that conditioning fees per se will be too heating for him.

So I'm continuing with the pony nuts - but an increased amount am and pm and have substituted his HiFi with the Alfa A Oil - which you can feed a good quantity of. So currently he's having 1.5 big scoops in every meal.

And as much haylage as I can get in him.
