Best dry feed for middle aged terriers please

Trying a few samples at the mo but tbh they devour anything so thats by the by. Looking at nutritional content so many are full of rubbish, and some are all very similar. They are on Royal Canin mini light at the moment, with mackarel fillets in brine (the latter has been the single best tip Ive ever had from our vet and has cured All skin / nail problems within 2 months).
One aged 6 and one 7, in medium work, and Not going to be allowed to be porkers in later life if I can help it.
Your advice much appreciated.
 
Harley is on Fish4dogs and apart from fishy breath which I'm now used to, doing well on it. Has no grains in it and over 55% fish, so good contents.

Currently going through a broken nail trauma (10 days on, not healed, proud flesh, slight infection all sorts of horrible options if it doesn't start to clear) can you tell me how makeral in brine helps? And how often do you feed it?
 
Thats interesting, and I hope he makes a full recovery soon. One of our terriers regularly splits his nails and has a very long winded condition which makes them extremely prone to breakage. The protein and oils from the mackarel / oil have really helped, and he is monitored closely (as has several other conditions that I wont bother you with). He has one fillet in his evening meal. I also supplement (and always have) seaweed, the same as for the ggs.
 
Thanks. Obv his diet at the moment is high in fish protein and oils anyway, but will buy some tomorrow... anything that will help!

I have actually being looking into doggy biotin... His nails always chip a lot anyway. But my vet tried to reassure me that he prob see half a dozen broken nails a week....
 
Yes I just looked at that feed and it looks great. We did try a prescribed biotin so could claim on the insurance and after 4 months the results weren't as good as what we are doing now. The Hunting Life have a good thread going about feeding fish to terriers and other working dogs and many feed mackerel heads and all, throwing caution to the wind re bones. Anyway good luck and enjoy your dogs breath hehe a real drawback!

that's really interesting that you'd tried biotin and this is working better. Will def buy some tomorrow. He often gets a can of tuna for lunch anyway to keep his weight up, so will just give him that instead!

Fish4dogs is good, and if you hunt about on the internet you can get it for a lot less!
