Today I went to look at a pony that on the pictures looked ok...but when I got there my heart sank. She is in such poor condition so I just couldn't leave her. She is 14.2 Thoroughbred X, 7 Year old, mare that recently (4-5 weeks her foal was weaned) she is dried up now and nolonger producing milk she will be doing light work so Im wanting to start building her up slowly. What feed and supplements would people advise. Thanks

Sounds like she has done her foal well. Our mare has done the same and all I have done is put her on decent grazing, nice hay and a handful of chaff with a measure of codlivine. She has picked up very quickly with her foal gone.

If you haven't got the clean grazing plenty of forage should see her pick up. I would worm her as she is a bought in horse.

The woman said she is a git to catch... & she'll be worse as she doesnt know me. she is a bit nerves bless her. Yes she defiantly needs worming! Did your mares bum go bonie? and her point of hip?

Put her on a good nutritional feed such as Saracens and a gastric support as could be suffering with ulcers. If we get this bad winter she will need it, as will all of our horses.

This is a newly bought in horse, the new owner will have no knowledge of temperament or manners. Caution is needed. I agree with your comments if the horse was a known quantity. The mare is newly weaned why would she have ulcers. She needs fibre first not starch and corn.
