As title suggests. Any recommendations for the best feed for a 21yr old mare who is in light work at the moment but will play polo in the summer. She is currently showing some age for the first time in her life after a winter off.

She is fed:

Ab lib hay
2 scoops of Alfa A Oil
2 scoops of Baileys No4 Topline Conditioning
30g of Glucosamine powder.

A day, split into two feeds.

Any recommendations highly appreciated. In the summer I may have to cut this feed as we have very good grazing and she might need the oomph but not the condition.

Im interested, whats in the Veteran Vitality feed? Got a 22yr old mare who will be in light hacking work and a 17yr old similar workload.

Mine is on
1/3 scoop D + H 16+ mix
1/3 Scoop Apple chaff
1/3 Scoop Pony Nuts
Biotin and Seaweed/Rosehip for barefeet and joints respectively.

3x a day at mo as he is not a good doer.

He is in full work getting ready for the eventing season (going to be 20 in April).

He is healthy and happy so it must work for him :)

Very individual thing feed though.

It looks the same as Fast Fibre, if you havent seen that, its like a balancer sized pellet that is mollasses and wholegrain free and contains speedibeet. It soaks into a mash within a few seconds (like FF does). It's high in oils and fibre, low starch.

I have been using VV, but at the smaller quantities im able to feed, i dont think it's doing a great deal for weight gain. Ive had better results since using Dodson's 16+ cubes.

But i do like VV alot!

Thanking you for that info...

A lady on our yard uses the Soft and Soak mash range for her oldie, smells lovely mixed with warm water. VV sounds similar.

Hi thank you for the replies. I am going to look into the senior mixes and make some comparisons.

She does not have any issues with eating as such, so whether it cn be soaked or not doesn't seem to be a priority. But she has most definitely lost her sparkle and her energy.

She is being vet checked next weekend, is wormed and has had her back checked etc.

Just wondering as have tried to look: How much Glucosamine is in the mix? And have you used the chaff/fibre they do as well?

Update:

Back to her happy self and forward going as ever!!

Thanks for advice, had swapped to Spillers vet conditioning mix due to other advice from friends and local feed place!!
