Hi,

currently ignoring the snow outside and planning ahead, also taking advantage of the sales!

My 40" standard Shetland needs a sweet itch rug, she hates snuggy hoods type rugs so looking at more like the shires/rambo type. Have found a bucas zebra one but was wondering about the fit as being a Shetland she had a chunky body and neck :)

What do fellow Shetland mum's use?

For my chunky 42" shetties I use either Derby House's own rugs or Gallop ones - cheap for if they wreck them but also the only ones that I have found that have a small enough neck hole but with a wide enough neck cover for a shetland.

I found Amigo Bug Rugs to be stupidly small but the Amigo turnouts and Amigo waterproof sweet itch rug have fitted beautifully!

Ruggles rugs are a good fit for Shetlands I believe

Second the point about the Amigo bug rug, that fits my narrow sec A but probably wouldn't fit a Shetland, ditto Loveson rugs.

I had a Derby House rug that I had to have altered to fit my sec A, that would have been perfect for a rounder pony, it did a pretty good job on my sweet itchy pony

Have had a look at ruggles and they only have 4'9's and teeny rugs left which will be too big as my pone has been a rug fit model for them so I know she needs a 4'6 :(

Do either of you know if the Rambo rugs are more generous than the amigo? I used a shires sweet itch rug on my 2 year old but it was hopelessly tight on his neck so don't think it would be any good for a Shetland :(

hmm, I used a Rambo for my Exmoor and the neck was inadequate to put it nicely! I ended up getting a different neck and fixing it on, they are nice rugs though. I also found that the PE fly rugs didn't do for him either. I did get an amigo bug rug for my smaller exmoor (who was also late cut and has quite a neck on him) it was a size up and actually fit him really nicely. The necks on these are a bit soft though IMO, and fall back quite a lot-since my larger Exmoor really needs decent neck protection I don't know what to do next year.

cornerstonebrowbands on ebay will make rugs to your measurements in a Boett type style.

I've found the materials to be a bit cheap and nasty....lots of static off the rug and the leg straps really stretched and went baggy on the one I had.

MOC that's what I'm worried about too. The shires one had quite a rigid neck and the bucas one looks to be similar. The Shetland is mainly itchy under her mane at the withers and a bit behind the ears so it falling down to easily is not a good idea.

I use a Rambo on my very chunky cob ...fits beautifully. The premier equine fits well but is slightly bigger (same size). Not bought for Shetlands though.
My sweet itch shettie has an IV horse one but it's rubbish and gappy around the neck so I'm watching this thread with interest.
I have a ruggles turnout that fits one of my Shetlands perfectly though so would be tempted to try one of their sweet itch rugs.

Ruggles have the rug without a neck in your size and you can buy a neck seperatly

google dinky rugs they do shetland rugs

So an update in case anyone Googles and is directed to this thread, I did buy a bucas zebra rug but it didn't fit at all.

The neck was thick enough but far to long for a Shetland and the belly flap was teeny so wouldn't stretch under a Shetland tum :(

Back to the drawing board.......

I used a premier equine sweet itch rug on my Shetland last year and it worked well but about half the price of a rambo

Paragon think it's called. On eBay looks like a boet really. I got one that fits my mini Shetland acceptably. It would provably be perfect on a standard. Wouldn't buy their mask/hood tho it was ludicrously big. I got (from memory) the smallest Rambo hood and again it's acceptable on him but would be perfect on a standard. He's very small.

Our shetland rescue cannot live without a sweet itch rug, poor lad, he is plagued by the flies & the ONLY rug that has saved him is the Buccas. He literally would rub his mane out completely (mane & tail & half his back were gone when we first got him & red raw bleeding). We now show him successfully during the summer with a full mane/tail thanks to the rug BUT if there's the odd day we've left it off (feel awful him having to have it on all the time), he will rub & rub. For us & Mystery that is the best! Mystery is a big Shetland, quite chunky if that helps! Meant to say also...had lots of cheaper ones & he just rips them.....plus our welshie grabs him by the necks & spins him round & rips the neck for him lol!!! but this one has stood the test!

The only rug we've had success with is a ruggles one with the full neck and it has saved our wee man last summer and still going strong (he has destroyed all other fly rugs!).
