Its almost that time of year again, the flies are starting to appear after a few lovely warm days.... What do you think is the best spray on the market? Some people swear by their own 'recipes' but we have yet to find one that we are 100% happy with......

I use Phaser and its the best Ive come across.

We really have bad horse flies at my yard, and we didnt have a problem after using this stuff.
Briliant, even for mozzies too.

I use Coopers its great but a bit of a pain to put on. Frasers is also very good

I make the H&H formula - think TheresaW is the keeper of this!!

Hubby tells me I'm a witch when I make it with all my little bottles of oil being potions!!!!!!!

On the subject of fly repellant I would really like one which will repel or kill horse flies for occasional use.

There is a competition centre near me which seems to have quite a swarm in summer and I have had a few bucks mid test before because one has locked on.

Unfortunately they have quite a few championships and do the summer regionals there and I cant afford to risk it.

I certainly wouldnt want to put a strong one on all the time but for a one off can you use the DEET ones, do they work and which type should you get?

Its a tough problem isn't it? My mare get so upset by flys and tosses her head constantly if they can get to her face. I've never found a fly repellent that I'm satisfied with. I use the 'Quiet Ride Mask' by Cashel which is great, but as its a full face and ears job, of course its not permitted in competition

I have wondered about those feed supplements that are supposed to deter flys, but when I asked about them on another forum, the consensus was that they make the horse's pee stink to high heaven but don't seem to deter the flys

Tried nearly every one and agree Nettex is good, but Barrier is better

I use the non-sting version on the sheath & sore bits and the normal version elsewhere

Works instantly, but wears off after around 4-5 hours

Have tried them all, and to be honest, the one I make up works as well and in a lot of cases better than commercial ones, is far cheaper and I have not had any problems using it on animals and humans. I don't like to put anything on my horse that I can't use on myself.

Good website for ordering oils is http://www.essential oils direct

Receipe is

5 caps of dettol - from a 500ml size bottle
250 ml of Avon Skin so Soft and fresh - 500 ml bath oil. This can be halved if midges not too bad.
1 teaspoon of citronella oil - can go up to 1 ½ if midges bad.
1 teaspoon of eucalyptus oil
1 teaspoon of lavender oil
1 teaspoon of tea tree oil
1 teaspoon cedarwood oil

Put into a 1 litre spray bottle. Top up to make 1 litre with either water or cold tea. Shake well before spraying and give a quick shake after every few squirts to make sure the oil is mixed with the water.

Spray on twice a day using enough to leave a fine mist on the coat. Ok for round sensitive areas.

Not the cheapest home remedy but does smell nice and works.
