Coopers Fly Repellent plus is the best I've found. It's quite expensive but doesn't have to be applied that often and so lasts ages.

Coopers Fly Repellant Plus.

Power Phaser is good I've heard but it has been known to have adverse affects and burn the skin of sensetives horses and I mean burn (blistering) due to what's in it, so please do a small patch test before using it if you horse has been known to be sensetive to other products, a complaint was made to the company so they may have changed what they put in it since.

I use super fly plus with avacado coat shine - really seems to work on our highland super mutant ninja midges

Made by Barrier Biotech - 1 litre for about £12. lasts for ages and smells gorgeous.

At a recent jumping lesson our instructor came and stood beside b coz she was getting bitten and we had non at all, so I reckons it's effective.

i make my own fly spray - there are some really good recipes on the net for natural concoctions - all the ingredients can be found in health food shops and in the kitchen cupboard

smells garlicky though so be warned - but works wonders

Look in Stable Yard there is a sticky post that has loads of recipes on it. I make my own and it works and costs me about £10 a summer

Ooooh thanks SU, that sounds like the most cost effective option so I think I will try that. Failing that (ie if I run out of patience/enthusiasm) I will look in my local saddlers for the ones you guys have recommended. Thanks everyone

Yep, Phaser has my vote too. Shop around, it's £3 cheaper in one of our local tack shops than in the other!!
I have tried loads of people's home-made recipes in the past, but none were that efficient. I'm in two minds whether to try mixing something up again, or stick with spending loads of money.
