My Connie is missing a large chunk of his mane and is very itchy, I am very suspicious he has sweet itch. Would love recommendations for the best lightweight flyrug.
TIA !

It sounds like you've got midges, nasty little creatures. We've had some over here because of the wetter summer.
Wildhorse Australia has one with insect repellant on it (very $$), I'm not convinced it lasts very long.
You can try Horseware Ireland who have sweet itch and mesh fly rugs on offer, I have one of the mesh rugs and I like the fit on my pony.
Alternatively you can try some flag rugs, plenty of manufacturers around.

Yes I'm guessing we do, we have a dam so therefore stagnant water :/
I saw the Wildhorse one and was close to buying, I like their fly veils. Wasn't sure what the insect treatment on their rugs was, though, as they don't say. Read that pyrethrins are what is needed? Went into the horsewear website and saw the rugs- do you have the Rambo one or the Amigo Pony Bug Rug Vamoose?
Thanks!!

I had a vamoose and wasn’t impressed, it actually rubbed my mares chest raw because the Velcro didn’t lie flat. I’ve got the Amigo Bug Rug and reall like it. It’s got a great long tail flap and long drop. Also has a removable neck rug!

ETA: the vamoose was an older one and they’ve fixed the front I think.

Great thanks! Does your pony stay cool in it? Doesn't look as breathable as the wildhorse one. Much better price AND in stock in his size, win!
I see there is the weatherbeeta comfitech supa fly, too.

I actually rate the Vamoose technology. The sweet itch specific one is too thick in my opinion on hot days and would make mine sweat if out in the day (usually he’s on night turnout in summer) but I use the fly rug with the same technology and rate it. Definitely keeps more flies at bay than a standard fly rug.

The bug rug mesh is great, mine haven't sweated (even the TB who is very hot). I agree with Sherry90 that the sweet itch one looks quite thick and probably too much for WA hot weather.

I have used the Wildhorse Australia mesh combos for years. They really work for my horse who used to get bad hives from insects in summer. They are cool and fit well and best of all no more hives.

Thanks for the recommendations for the Amigo rug all, very impressed with it. Super light but doing the job RE the flies, mane is looking better already!
Now looking at the Amigo Bravo turnout rug for winter.

Just be careful if you are using pyrethrin impregnated rugs if you have cats. Cats are very sensitive to pyrethrin and love sitting on horse rugs. So if you have cats in your stable yard then make sure you store the rug out of their reach when not in use.

Great news! I am looking at the winter rug too, I DON'T need anymore rugs until my current (7 year old) Weatherbeetas die though...

Wow 7 year old rug! I thought most bought new each season.. altho if I do spend $250 on 1 it would be nice if it lasted more than 1 winter.
