They are currently on some expensive supposedly additive free food specially for allergies (forget the name it is £29 for a bag) but they are still itchy, Any suggestions? They won't eat James welbeloved no matter how long they go without food.

I have just purchased some 'Burns' food on the recommendation of our hunt chairman with an itchy terrier. He never panders to his dogs when it comes to feeding them but highly recommended this to me after trying it himself. It is about £20 for a 7.5 kilo bag so not cheap but if it works. Tried James Wellbeloved with no joy as did our chairman.

My male GSD had a problem with allergies and we switched them both to Arden Grange hypoallergenic, £28 a large bag but I get it off a rep.
After narrowing things down (without going for the full skin test/work-up) we think it is actually an allergy to tree pollen.
However touch wood it has been calm since April.

Westies are prone to itchy skin though.

I feed my very itchy terrier Royal Canin sensitivity diet, it does seem to work, one of the vets today has told me to start her on evening primrose tablets.

Have found from experience that once they develop the food allergies then they will be ok on a new food for a while before you see the problems back again as each food has different combinations of additives and preservatives. Every food with a shelf life needs preservatives and stabilisers to survive intact. So if it is one of these that is causing the itch then it could mean problems with most foods.

You need to read the labels but even then they can hide ingredients by having others add them and buy in the product then there is no need to declare the ingredient in the pet food!

My latest rescue a much older dog took ages to detox even on a raw diet so had built up quite an allergy to additives in the food. He is fine now and his new coat is excellent. I would go raw or at least start researching a lightly cooked diet around human grade food, then you will know there are no hidden extras in the food you feed!

Whatever your decide ask the feed company awkward questions then you will know how "good" their product is potentially.
