Query was more related to my own horse who is slipping badly behind on the lane outside our yard which is very smooth concrete. Think I will get his hinds removed and try that as im concerned he will worsen with icy weather approaching.
IMHO, if you can make sure the frogs are in contact with the ground, that also helps with grip whether there are shoes on or not.
There are some types of very smooth tarmac that are lethal with shoes, but fine unshod. Some of the more gravelly rough tarmac roads seem pretty good for both shod and unshod, so to a certain extent it depends on what the roads are like where you ride.
