Hi, had a shires but found it rubbed, now using a best friends but pony not really getting much grass - anyone used a greenguard? Ponies on a large field with grass long enough to get through a muzzle so cant risk one that will come off easily. any ideas?

I would bet that the pony is getting enough grass through the Best Friend muzzle , if you are worried I'd put a little hay out as an experiment. If the pony is really hungry it'll eat the hay through the muzzle, if it leaves it the pony's just trying to make you feel guilty.

I've got shire's but haven't used it.

Two weeks later I bought the greenguard and halter and it seems to work.

Shires is a carbon copy of the best friend, so probably won't help if it is rubbing.

Greenguard is probably the next thing to try, although you might just need to line any muzzle with sheepskin to avoid rubbing, as it is the nature of the beast.

My big Irish horse has a Greenguard Grazing muzzle and has done for some years now as even with the right amount of work he gorges himself silly when he is out at grass. Totally recommend these muzzles, yes they are expensive but you get what you pay for and its the only one my horse hasn't managed to wreck or get off.

I am currently using the shires one.

I have had to make the hole a tiny bit larger and pad the nose out with a bit of sheepskin as he claimed that if I didnt he would just not bother to graze and would starve himself to death!!!

But so far it has not rubbed him and has stayed on
