Am asking for a friend who has just taken on an ex-racer - fresh out of training. - he is turning his nose up at hay overnight and being already quite lean, could do without losing weight.

Any ideas gratefully received.

Thanks

What about Haylage? Hay Replacers work out very expensive.

My mare can take or leave hay so in the winter, I leave her with a tub trug of Readigrass. However, last year she was unable to eat hay at all so she was on a hay replacer made up of a number of different fibres. Feeds that can be used as hay replacers are:

Grass Chaffs
Grass Nuts
Dengie Hi Fi Range
Mollichaff Veteran
Dodson and Horrell Fibergy
Happy Hoof
High Fibre Cubes (Fast Fibre being brilliant due to the high fibre content)
Speedibeet
Fibre-beet

There are lots to choose from. If you are going to repplace your horses fibre intake completely and they need to gain weight, then you will need to feed between 2-2.5% of their body weight. My 14hh pony required 7.7kgs which is a lot of feed and a lot of money!

Before I going down this route, I would have the horses teeth looked at and possibly bloods taken (if you havent already) as their could be an underlying problem.

Hope they start eating soon :)

Might be worth trying a few different types of haylage, as they are made from different grasses so whilst they might dislike one, they may love another. I have yet to meet a horse who doesn't love mainbale haylage!
I can also recommend "Just Grass", fabbie stuff.
