best heavy weight rug under £170? Premier equine?

Am investing in a new heavy weight rug for the winter. My boys quite fine and prone to getting cold and dropping weight easily so it has to be... AT LEAST 1200d (pref higher), around 450g so I don't have to layer up, have a neck and be under £170ish. Have heard brilliant things about the premier equine heavy weights so was thinking about one of those? Any recommendations?
 
I've been using PE for a while now and have been very pleased. It might be worth getting either a 200 or 300 gram rug. If you don't get a rug with a fixed neck then the Trio liners can be used with it.
 
My mare has a 300g and 450g PE, and she shares Trio liners under a 70g PE rug with my friends mare of a similar size. Personally, I think the Trio liner thing is a big old faff but I generally like the rugs, very snug, very water proof, very hard wearing, she came withe the 450g one and I bought the 300g second hand for a very good price
 
bought my first premier equines as were half price in sale in september- i LOVE them, fit both my horses well and give much better coverage than many rugs. mark todd comes in second and JHL as similar fit but cheaper. i need to save up for some more!
 
another vote for PE. I was always a weatherbeeta fan but am in the process of replacing all my rugs with PE. Only thing I would say is dont go for the cheaper lower denier if you get one of their lighter weights at any point. I have one that faded really quickly but i have to say their customer service has been great and i got a voucher from them because of it :D I have the 450g and its the best rug Ive had by miles.

I agree with this. My boys live out with very little shelter available, and with these rugs on even when the temps dropped as low as -21 the winter before last here they were as snug as a bug. My boys also trash all rugs they have, most don't stand up to their attention for very long - the worst was a 20 hour period and rug was in tatters - quite literally !!! But these rugs are fantastic.
Also in most heavyweight rugs one of my boys sweats up to the point of white foam all over him underneath (weatherbeeta) are the worst for this, but the shires ones it can be as warm as a freak 15 degrees (mad weather patterns we have in our fields some days going from -10 to +15 throughout the day), and he is still fine :-)
The rugs are so great we bought another 2 in preparation for this winter. This is the 4th winter with our original ones and apart from the normal wear and tear and minor repairs and washing each year they still look great and function very well.
I haven't tried PE rugs yet as OH is loathe to spend that much in one go, and I don't want rugs with layers etc, just one rug that does what it says on the tin !!

Great design - they have thin liners which zip out and wash really easily. Each rug comes with two liners. Very well made, tough rugs. Customer service also excellent. LOVE them!

I second this Shires rug - it really is fantastic and I've stopped buying the PE HW ones in favour of the Shires one. I found the PE ones so sodding heavy when covered in thick mud, and also found they came up a bit tight around the shoulder on a couple of mine but the Shires ones are ample.

Totally agree the PE become a wet heavy mess in the thick of winter, horrid rugs I hate them.
 
Funnily enough I have that Shires rug now. But the front clips have broken, it constantly sits wonky on my lad and even though I had it washed and reproofed in August, it now leaks through the seams. Admittedly, it was second hand, but its only 4 years old and really does need replacing.

I think I'll follow the general consensus and get a PE...
 
Just bought horseware Rhino Plus turnout Heavy for 156 euros on TRI Equestrians website which would be a good bit cheaper than 156 sterling. Good rug have had one previously and its lasted for years.
 
Couldn't stand the 450g PE I had. It was really heavy and cumbersome when wet.
Rambo Supreme gets my vote every time.
 
Another vote for PE Rugs! I have their LW turnout, 200x, Storm Buster 200 and Storm Buster 450 and all of them are brilliant.

I was a big Weatherbeeta fan, but the PE rugs are a much better fit on my WB.
 
I have one of the heavyweight Shires rugs and tried it on the pony at the weekend, I was very impressed with the fit and quality of the rug

So much so that I put my other heavyweight rug up for sale
 
Horseware Amigo Bravo 12 Plus. Both of mine lives out in theres (one clipped) in last years horrid winter and were snug as a bug. Great quality and £115ish. Don't like PE, very heavy when wet.
 
After reading your post OP, I went on the premier equine site and just spent money on my first PE rug! Im a little excited even if im now a little poor....
 
As much as I like the PE rugs, I have started buying the Axiom rugs from ebay and have to say they are extremely good and half the price of PE. They are very robust and come up quite large in size as they are very deep rugs. I've also been very impressed with Swish Equestrian rugs.
 
PE all day long for me too ..... I started buying them long before anyone knew who they were (they`re local to me and i know folk who work there). I still have one of the original rugs i bought, it has fit 3 of my horses over the last 5 years and is still going strong :)
 
I only use Rambo turnouts for winter. Bought my first Wug 10 yrs ago and its still going strong, albeit as a spare or under rug these days. Got a Rambo Original for one horse and a secondhand (off ebay) Rambo Supreme for the other. Both horses out 24/7 and one is fully clipped. For me the Rambos are worth every penny as they seem to last forever and are remain waterproof for much longer than other rugs I have had.
